Alliance-Outcome Associations In Interventions For Youth Internalizing Disorders: Identifying Mediators And Moderators, Deepika Bose Jun 2021

Alliance-Outcome Associations In Interventions For Youth Internalizing Disorders: Identifying Mediators And Moderators, Deepika Bose

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Suboptimal treatment response rates in interventions for youth internalizing disorders (anxiety, depression, OCD) highlight a critical need to enhance intervention outcomes. My dissertation project addresses this need by identifying therapeutic process variables that predict intervention outcomes, and examining how, for whom, and under what circumstances they contribute to outcomes. In a series of three manuscripts, I present findings on a systematic review and meta-analysis of alliance-outcome associations in youths receiving intervention for internalizing disorders (Chapter II) and examine variables that may explain or influence alliance-outcome associations in interventions for internalizing problems in university-based (Chapter III) and usual care …

The Effect Of Parent Emotion-Related Talk On Infant Behavior And Emotion Regulation, Nicole Elise Lorenzo Sep 2018

The Effect Of Parent Emotion-Related Talk On Infant Behavior And Emotion Regulation, Nicole Elise Lorenzo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Early parent-infant interactions play a critical role in the social, emotional, and behavioral development of children. While several aspects of parent-infant interactions have been thoroughly examined, parent emotion socialization has not been examined to the same extent. The current work aimed to examine the development of parent emotion-related talk in mothers of infants with and without elevated behavior problems in two studies. The first study examined the developmental trajectory of parent emotion-related talk among mothers of infants with and without elevated behaviors. Furthermore, a secondary goal of the study was to examine the effect of parent emotion-related talk on infant …

Reducing Risks For Anxiety And Depression Among Urban Youth: Leveraging After School Programs To Promote Emotion Regulation, Erin R. Hedemann Jun 2018

Reducing Risks For Anxiety And Depression Among Urban Youth: Leveraging After School Programs To Promote Emotion Regulation, Erin R. Hedemann

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rates of internalizing disorders in childhood are around 10% and higher among racial/ethnic minority youth and youth living in poverty. Targeting empirically derived processes associated with anxiety and depression may be an efficient and effective way to minimize risks for internalizing symptoms and impairment. Deficits in emotion regulation (e.g., increased use of emotional suppression, decreased use of cognitive reappraisal) are associated with anxiety and depression in youth and improve with treatment. The current study examined the acceptability and promise of an intervention targeting these emotion regulation strategies in the context of an after-school music program. Reflecting a community-based participatory research …

The Development Of A Depression Preventive Intervention For Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Michael C. Meinzer Jun 2015

The Development Of A Depression Preventive Intervention For Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Michael C. Meinzer

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the considerable progress made identifying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a risk for depressive outcomes in adolescence and adulthood as well as potential explanations for the co-occurrence of ADHD and unipolar depression (i.e., emotion regulation, family support, and reward responsivity), targeted depression prevention efforts have not yet been implemented for adolescents with ADHD. Thus, the specific aims were as follows: (1) develop a behaviorally oriented, tailored, depression preventive intervention for adolescents with ADHD targeting variables empirically supported to account for the covariation between ADHD and depression (Behaviorally Enhancing Adolescents’ Mood; BEAM), (2) pilot BEAM in a small sample of adolescents …
