Evaluative Inquiry: The Road To A Learning Organization, Antonia Pérez Bolívar

Capstone Collection

This study looks at the effects of evaluative inquiry as a tool for organizational development in the “Centro de Lenguas y Educación Intercultural”(CELEI), a small educational institution. The study is framed as an action research and its purpose is to initiate a process of organizational change that will consolidate the newly established institution and to introduce learning as a built-in organizational strategy. The study is structured as a meta-research on the evaluative inquiry intervention. The intervention was a cooperative effort carried out by an in-house evaluation team and the participation of all staff members. As Action Research, the evaluation process …

The Impact Of Maternal Relationship Quality On Emerging Adults’ Prosocial Tendencies: Indirect Effects Via Regulation Of Prosocial Values, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Stephanie D. Madsen, Larry J. Nelson

Faculty Publications

Studies document that parents serve as children’s primary socialization agents, particularly for moral development and prosocial behavior; however, less is known regarding parental influences on prosocial outcomes during the transition to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to investigate how mother–child relationship quality was related to prosocial tendencies via emerging adults’ regulation of prosocial values. Participants included 228 undergraduate students (ranging from 18 to 25 years; 90% European American) and their mothers (ranging from 38 to 59 years) from four locations across the United States. Path analyses using structural equation modeling revealed that mother–child relationship quality was related to …

Looking On The Bright Side: The Role Of Identity Status And Gender On Positive Orientations During Emerging Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen, Larry J. Nelson Oct 2007

Looking On The Bright Side: The Role Of Identity Status And Gender On Positive Orientations During Emerging Adulthood, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen, Larry J. Nelson

Faculty Publications

Emerging adulthood has been characterized as an age of possibilities that involves heightened identity exploration and risk-taking. Although some scholars have investigated the relation between identity status and risk behaviors in emerging adulthood, less attention has been paid to the relation between identity status and prosocial orientations. Thus, the current study examined how emerging adults’ engagement in positive behaviors (i.e., prosocial tendencies, internalization of values, religiosity) varied as a function of identity status and gender. Results indicated that emerging adults who were in identity diffusion reported fewer prosocial tendencies, lower scores on internalization of values and lower religiosity, but emerging …

Rising To The Challenge: Integrating Social Science Into Nsf Environmental Observatories, Shalini Vajjhala, Alan Krupnick, Eleanor Mccormick, Morgan Grove, Patricia Mcdowell, Charles Redman, Leonard Shabman, Mitchell Small

Long Term Ecological Research Network

In early 2006, following meetings of the CLEANER (Collaborative Large-Scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research) Social Science Committee and Executive Committee, plans were developed for a workshop on improving social science integration into CLEANER and other NSF Environmental Observatories (EOs). This effort was motivated by the realization that first, social, behavioral, and economic science theory and research were centrally important to resolving the major "grand challenge" questions being addressed by the observatories, and second, more coordinated research efforts across social science, natural science, and engineering disciplines were necessary to "rise to these challenges."

This report is the product of …

Associations Between Shyness And Internalizing Behaviors, Externalizing Behaviors, And Relationships During Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Sarah Badger, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen Aug 2007

Associations Between Shyness And Internalizing Behaviors, Externalizing Behaviors, And Relationships During Emerging Adulthood, Larry J. Nelson, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Sarah Badger, Carolyn Mcnamara Barry, Jason S. Carroll, Stephanie D. Madsen

Faculty Publications

Many studies have documented the ways in which shyness can be a barrier to personal well-being and social adjustment throughout childhood and adolescence; however, less is known regarding shyness in emerging adulthood. Shyness as experienced during emerging adulthood may continue to be a risk factor for successful development. The purpose of this study was to compare shy emerging adults with their non-shy peers in (a) internalizing behaviors, (b) externalizing behaviors, and (c) close relationships. Participants included 813 undergraduate students (500 women, 313 men) from a number of locations across the United States. Results showed that relatively shy emerging adults, both …

Effects Of Participating In An Asset-Building Intervention On Social Inclusion, Margaret Lombe, Michael Sherraden Jul 2007

Effects Of Participating In An Asset-Building Intervention On Social Inclusion, Margaret Lombe, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

The United States is arguably one of the richest countries in the world. However, poverty is still an issue of great concern. This observation suggests the need for more innovative interventions to reduce severe need and create terms for meaningful participation of vulnerable individuals in economic, political, and social exchange. Using a sample of IDA program participants (N=840), who were randomly assigned to a control and experimental group, this study explores the relationship between an asset-building intervention and social inclusion from the human capabilities perspective. Results reveal a significant relationship between participating in an IDA program and social inclusion. Although …

Dual Incentives And Dual Asset Building: The Hutubi Rural Social Security Loan Program In China, Baorong Guo, Jin Huang, Michael Sherraden, Li Zou

Center for Social Development Research

The Hutubi Rural Social Security Loan program is a policy innovation in a rural area of China by loaning savings in social security accounts back to peasants for them to purchase assets for agricultural and other development. In contrast to the nationwide recession in rural social security, this program has shown its success in proliferating rural social security funds and retaining social security participants. With a focus on the administrative data of the loan program, this study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the loan program and examine how asset building is possible for the poor when institutional incentives …

中国农村资产社会政策: 社会养老保险制度的变革 [Asset-Based Policy In Rural China: An Innovation In The Retirement Social Insurance Program], Baorong Guo, Jin Huang, Li Zou, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

In response to the growing rural-urban inequality, China is undertaking a series of policy initiatives to promote rural development. In addition to redistributive policies aiming at social protection, asset-based policy, which integrates social protection and social investment, is another viable option for progressive rural development. In 1998, the Hutubi local government in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China implemented an innovative retirement program which allows account holders to use accounts as legal collateral to borrow small loans and invest in productive assets such as farming supplies and equipment, education, and small businesses. Using the data gathered by the program …

Fostering Low-Income Homeownership: A Longitudinal Randomized Experiment On Individual Development Accounts, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Jung-Sook Lee, Kate Irish, Chang-Keun Han

Center for Social Development Research

For low-income families, homeownership represents an important strategy to move out of poverty and offers long-term social and economic development opportunities. Individual Development Account (IDA) programs facilitate savings towards assets such as home purchase through matched savings, financial education and case management. Using longitudinal experiment data from the American Dream Demonstration, this study examines the influence of IDA participation on homeownership rates among low-income participants after 18 months (Wave 2) of program participation and after 48 months (Wave 3) at program completion. Involvement in specific home-search activities at Waves 2 and 3 was measured to determine whether these activities mediated …

Vita Sites: Linking Tax Returns And Asset Building Strategies In Indian Country, Kristen Wagner, Karen Edwards, Amy Locklear Hertel, Miriam Jorgensen, Dana Klar

Center for Social Development Research

On an individual and family basis, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has important poverty alleviation characteristics. Few populations or places in the United States are as needful of the dollars provided by EITC receipt as Indian Country. The receipt of EITC will not alleviate poverty in Indian Country alone, but can be a viable start by providing thousands of dollars to families in Native communities. During the two years this project has been underway, more than 9,000 tax returns have been filed at 14 Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites serving Indian Country. The study examined the number of …

Increasing Parent Educational Expectations For Children In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Potential Role Of Assets, Gina Chowa, William Elliott Iii

Center for Social Development Research

It is commonly held in the education literature that parent expectations are an important factor in predicting children’s achievement in school. However, little research has been conducted on educational expectations of parents living in developing countries. In this study of Ugandans we examine whether parents save more when they are given access to Asset Development Accounts (ADAs) and financial training than parents receiving financial training but no ADAs, and/or parents with no ADA or financial training. We find that Ugandan parents who receive both an ADA and financial training experience an increase in mean wealth of US$77.4 over a two …

The Achievement Gap From A Capabilities And Asset Perspective, William Elliott Iii, Margaret Sherrard Sherraden Jul 2007

The Achievement Gap From A Capabilities And Asset Perspective, William Elliott Iii, Margaret Sherrard Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Current explanations for the achievement gap do not fully explain why high-achieving poor and minority children perceive of college as being out of reach. This paper reviews perspectives on the achievement gap and proposes a model that incorporates a capabilities and assets approach. The uneven playing field created by unequal distribution of assets sustains educational advantage and high expectations for college among children from families with assets, while dampening expectations for college among poor and minority children. As a possible avenue to closing the gap, we suggest that increasing poor and minority children’s capability for financing college may increase educational …

Assets Beyond Saving In Individual Development Accounts, Chang-Keun Han, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Michael Sherraden Jul 2007

Assets Beyond Saving In Individual Development Accounts, Chang-Keun Han, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

This study examines whether participation in Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) leads to a significant growth in assets beyond saving in the IDA accounts. Using a longitudinal experimental research design for low-income IDA participants, we test for impacts on five measures of assets: liquid assets, other financial assets, total financial assets, real assets, and total assets. Results show that, while there are no large differences in liquid and financial assets between the treatment group and the control group, IDA participants in the take-up group have more real assets and total assets than members of the control group. Results suggest that additional …
