Organizational Politics: Harmful Or Helpful?, Laura Porter Soares Dec 2018

Organizational Politics: Harmful Or Helpful?, Laura Porter Soares

Instructional Design Capstones Collection

Politics play a role in almost every organization – churches, schools, sports teams, and even volunteer organizations. However, the place where politics can directly impact people on a daily basis is the workplace.

Literature on organizational politics has historically focused on a negative view of politics. More recently, however, researchers have discovered that workplace politics is not inherently negative and can even include positive traits. This shift primarily began with the work of Gotsis and Kortezi in 2010 and 2011. As researchers sought to expand the perspective, they argued that organizational politics has the potential to be positive, as well. …

Behavioral Instruments In Renewable Energy And The Role Of Big Data: A Policy Perspective, Sarah Giest, Ishani Mukherjee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

There has been a surge in the application of behavioral insights for environmental policymaking. It is often presented as an easy and low-cost intervention to alter individual behavior. However, there is limited insight into the cost effectiveness of these attempts and the impact of inserting behavioral policy instruments into an existing mix of traditional tools in a particular policy sector. Furthermore, there has been little focus on the intersection of large behavioral datasets and how they could complement behavioral insights. We present a conceptual overview of how the intersection of big data and behavioral knowledge would work in the renewable …

Two training series were designed to meet the needs of development new hires: Fundraising Program Training and Business Skills Training. The program training …

09. Group Dynamics, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

CORE

The Group Dynamics module focuses on informing students about inter/intra group interactions, while also demonstrating the role of an individual within a group. As individuals become a part of a group, they lose a certain distinction between their personal identity and their group personality, or prototype. Individuals become part of a social categorization and comparison, and require the skills of empathy and relations to successfully communicate with not only their ingroup, but also their outgroup. An absence of awareness of the feelings around them can develop the negative effects of groupthink, as individual ideas are unheard. As fitting into the …

A Third Class Of Worker: The Dependent Contractor, Lisa J. Fendrick Oct 2018

A Third Class Of Worker: The Dependent Contractor, Lisa J. Fendrick

Student Publications

The following research paper is intended to address the worker classification issue that has intensified due to the rise of the gig economy. After reviewing the current literature on the subject, it will be made clear that a change must be made to the binary classification system that is used in the United States, and to the methods used to categorize workers within the system. This paper proposes the addition of a ‘dependent contractor’ category, which would be a subcategory of employee, and would fall between independent contractor and employee in terms of what benefits they would be entitled to. …

Alliance Activism: Feminist And Videogame Learning Principles In Building An Identity-Based, Personal-Development Roadmap Addressing Subjective Bias And Discrimination, Delivered In A Mass-Briefing Format Using Videogame Terminology, Erik Anker

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

While many white individuals in America are antiracist in their attitudes, many are not. This makes conversations with whites around race a delicate space: addressing an imbalance of privilege with those who benefit from it. Additionally, to not alienate whites from antiracist causes by associating them with a historical identity seeped in racism calls for its own nuance. The project described in this thesis looks to address these concerns by providing whites with a roadmap for personal growth consisting of various identities for addressing bias, discrimination, and oppression in honest and proactive ways. The delivery of these identities could be …

Service Leadership: The First Year Student Experience, Connor Curtis

Servant leadership, in the words of Robert Greenleaf from the Greenleaf Center of Servant Leadership, is “a servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” This has become one of the guiding theories of leadership within the Center for Student Leadership Development’s (CSLD) Leadership Studies minor at the University of Rhode Island. First-year students in the Leadership Studies minor have the opportunity to learn different leadership models and theories and apply them to their own life. My personal experience and the experiences of others who have participated in service projects locally, nationally, …

The study was split fairly evenly between sophomores, juniors, and seniors. To start, the survey included two demographic questions: gender and class year. Participants completed an online survey about the relationships among group mates, group involvement, and group support experience. Questions about the overall satisfaction and performance were also included. A correlational design …
