Population Growth And Land Resource Conflicts In Tivland, Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D Jan 2014

Population Growth And Land Resource Conflicts In Tivland, Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D

Dr. Fanan Ujoh

The complex issues of population-resources pressure vis-à-vis communal conflicts in Tivland is the focus of this study. Field interviews and observations were carried out while Census figures for 1953, 1991 and 2006, and Land Use/Land Cover (LU/LC) data of study area for 1987, 1997 and 2007 were used to calculate the Land Consumption Rate (LCR) and Land Absorption Coefficients (LAC). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc comparisons using Tukey HSD test were applied. The results reveal that: (i) greatest increase in LCR (0.019) was recorded between 1987 and 1997 while the later period between 1997 and 2007 recorded a …

Structured Transformation And Natural Resources Management In Africa, William G. Moseley Jan 2014

Structured Transformation And Natural Resources Management In Africa, William G. Moseley

William G Moseley

This chapter examines recent trends in African resource-based economies, explores the risks of an economy overly focused on primary production, reviews the theoretical literature on the reasons countries get stuck as peripheral producers, and interrogates past approaches that have been undertaken to pursue economic diversification (failed and successful). In sum, the chapter seeks to answer a few fundamental questions. Given the recent commodity boom, and soaring economic growth rates in many African countries, why should there be cause for concern? How fragile is economic growth based on primary production? Do natural resources intrinsically impede economic diversification? Under what conditions can …

Productivity Gains And The Limits Of Tropical Ranching In Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal Jan 2012

Productivity Gains And The Limits Of Tropical Ranching In Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal

Shawn Van Ausdal

Contrary to the common assumption that Colombian ranchers were uninterested or unable to improve their cattle operations before the 1950s, this article provides evidence of slowly rising productivity indices from the mid-nineteenth century. These improvements were based on the diffusion of African grasses, new breeds of cattle, barbed-wire fencing, and better ranch management. However, despite such gains, Colombian ranchers failed to break into the international beef trade; their productivity levels did not rise sufficiently to compete against major exporters such as Argentina. Nonetheless, the gains they made suggest that this failure was not simply rooted in the backward and non-productive …

Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette Dec 2011

Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette

Cari Bourette

Since 2006, there has been ongoing research into the correlation of a set of oscillating mood factors and socioeconomic, geopolitical, and natural events with the goal of forecasting increased risks of destabilizing events. While promising results have been forthcoming, it has been difficult to present models that allowed those outside a small circle of specialists to participate. Between July 2007 and June 2010, weekly social mood projections, as published in monthly issues of MoodCompass, were used to develop a model to convert four oscillating mood factors into stock market expectations. This model was modified to generate signals of projected stock …

Feasibility Assessment For Tourism Development In Persian Gulf (A Case Study Of Hendourabi Island), Mohammad Hossein Imani Khoshkhoo, Mehrdad Karami

mohammad hossein imani khoshkhoo

ABSTRACT Today, tourism industry is one of the fields that give diversity to the countries' economy. Whereas, according to investigations of the Global Tourism Organization, tourism is a key to development in many developing and less developed countries. On the other hand, a brief review of the economical planning of our (Iran's) neighbors and their general focus on tourism as one of the most important sectors of economy, further confirms the need to pay more strict attention to this competitive market. Therefore, it seems necessary to expand the tourism market of these islands and remove their deprivations via canonizing facilities …

Potreros, Ganancias Y Poder. Una Historia Ambiental De La Ganadería En Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal Nov 2009

Potreros, Ganancias Y Poder. Una Historia Ambiental De La Ganadería En Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal

Shawn Van Ausdal

The Logic Of Livestock: An Historical Geography Of Cattle Ranching In Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal Jan 2009

The Logic Of Livestock: An Historical Geography Of Cattle Ranching In Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal

Shawn Van Ausdal

This dissertation examines a significant yet little understood economic activity in modern Colombian history: cattle ranching. The importance of cattle stem from their role in the settlement of the country’s lowlands, the conflicts around property rights, and the proportion of capital dedicated to ranching. Because scholars have paid it little heed, most reproduce a common misconception about the logic of livestock: that it was principally driven by a range of ulterior motives – from satisfying cultural status to a source of political power; and from establishing territorial control to either a speculative investment or a hedge against risk – rather …

Fishery Regulation And New England's Local Economies: Preliminary Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Spencer Fleury Ph.D. Jan 2009

Fishery Regulation And New England's Local Economies: Preliminary Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Spencer Fleury Ph.D.

Spencer Fleury Ph.D.

This paper examines the economic impacts of Amendment Five and Amendment Seven to the Northeast Multispecies Groundfish Management Plan on the economies of coastal cities and towns in southern New England, using a difference-in-differences OLS regression model and a Probit model. The potential existence of city-level economic impacts on fishing-related employment, average wages paid, median home values, and the unemployment rate was examined, with the object of providing guidance for policymakers involved in developing fisheries regulations. The results do not support the hypothesis that these regulations had a significant adverse effect on southern New England‘s coastal economies.

Gasoline Costs, Public Transit, And Sustainability, Bradley W. Lane Oct 2008

Gasoline Costs, Public Transit, And Sustainability, Bradley W. Lane

Bradley W. Lane

Excessive levels of automobile driving are generally acknowledged to have several negative externalities that contribute to the lack of sustainability in current transport systems. Achieving a reduction in VMT inevitably requires the introduction of disincentives for driving. This has generally been lacking in the US, which has relatively low parking costs and taxes on fuel compared to its developed-world counterparts. However, starting immediately after the Hurricane Katrina disaster, fuel costs in the United States have increased dramatically relative to previous long-term price behavior. This increase has brought attention to the driving behavior and travel preferences of US citizens. A large …

Spatial Heterogeneity And Transit Use, Bradley W. Lane, Takatsugu Kobayashi Jun 2007

Spatial Heterogeneity And Transit Use, Bradley W. Lane, Takatsugu Kobayashi

Bradley W. Lane

The results of investments in transit and redevelopment vary widely across space. To better understand the investment and use connection, this research analyzes the spatial characteristics of modal choice and land-use locally rather than globally. The proportion of people around stations using transit is modeled as a function of environmental variables, spatial proximity to transit, and spatial autocorrelation among those variables by using geographically weighted regression (GWR) on data from St. Louis, Missouri. The analysis generated spatially variant regression coefficients and R-square values that suggest significant spatial variation in the influence of neighborhood factors on modal choice.

The Eu–Acp Economic Partnership Agreements And The ‘Development Question’: Constraints And Opportunities Posed By Article Xxiv And Special And Differential Treatment Provisions Of The Wto, Cosmas Milton Obote Obote Ochieng Ochieng

Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng

This article argues that Article XXIV and special and differential treatment (SDT) provisions of the WTO present a number of constraints and opportunities to the design and scope of the proposed economic partnership agreements between the European Union (EU) and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. It examines the negotiating positions of both sides to argue that were the EU's position to prevail, ACP and other developing countries would likely suffer an ‘erosion of the development principles’ embedded within the WTO. It is shown that the differences between the two groups over the desirability and/or applicability of negotiating free trade …
