An Orthodox Heresy: Scientific Rhetoric And The Science Of Prions., Carol Reeves
An Orthodox Heresy: Scientific Rhetoric And The Science Of Prions., Carol Reeves
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
A significant theoretical shift in the research community examining a class of terminal, infectious neurological disorders that includes Mad Cow Disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and Kuru was assisted by rhetorical production. The local rhetoric of one laboratory, that of Professor Stanley B. Prusiner, involved first situating an heretical hypothesis within the framework of the orthodox narrative and then audaciously promoting that heresy. Another aspect of rhetorical production in this case involved situating a new language associated with the heretical hypothesis. To promote their new lexicon, the Prusiner team evoked orthodox values of consistency, efficiency, and collective ratification. Eventually, what was once …
Monstrous Youth In Suburbia: Disruption And Recovery Of The American Dream, Kristen Hoerl
Monstrous Youth In Suburbia: Disruption And Recovery Of The American Dream, Kristen Hoerl
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
Although the American Dream myth idealizes youth who grow up in suburbia as culturetypes of imminent success, the Columbine High School shootings demonstrated that all not suburban youth will grow up to succeed. The extensive news media coverage of the tragedy reflects broader anxieties about the declining status of the suburbs in American society. In the wake of the shootings, the news media created a myth of monstrous youth in suburbia that functioned to repair suburbanites’ waning faith in the myth of the American Dream.

The Oxford Guide To Style, Priscilla Finley
Library Faculty Publications
Oxford's style manual will be essential to users previously dependent on Hart's Rules for Compositors and Readers (39th ed., 1986)--those preparing manuscripts for Oxford University Press and other British publishers--which Ritter revises and enlarges. Chapters cover general publication topics such as front matter and preparation of copy and proofs; editorial issues like punctuation, numbers, and capitalization; special conventions regarding science and mathematics; and "specialist subjects" including British and EU law, music, poetry, drama, and sacred works.
Extending Learning Opportunities In The Basic Communication Course: Exploring The Pedagogical Benefits Of Speech Laboratories, Stephen K. Hunt, Cheri J. Simonds
Extending Learning Opportunities In The Basic Communication Course: Exploring The Pedagogical Benefits Of Speech Laboratories, Stephen K. Hunt, Cheri J. Simonds
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study asked 527 students enrolled in a basic communication course to evaluate the efficacy of a speech lab in relation to speech requirements stipulated by their instructors. In addition, the researchers examined the scores of 435 student speeches to determine if students who visited the lab earned higher grades compared to students that did not visit the lab. Results showed that (a) most instructors require their students to visit the lab before at least one speech, (b) the vast majority of students perceive the help they receive in the lab to be very useful, and (c) students who visit …
Listening Treatment In The Basic Communication Course Text, Laura A. Janusik, Andrew D. Wolvin
Listening Treatment In The Basic Communication Course Text, Laura A. Janusik, Andrew D. Wolvin
Basic Communication Course Annual
Numerous studies have indicated that listening is instrumental for academic and professional success, and most students receive listening instruction only in the basic communication course. This study analyzed the treatment of listening in the 17 most widely used basic communication course textbooks. The majority of the textbooks did devote at least one chapter to listening; however, the treatment was generally light, atheoretical, and lacked substantive listening scholarship.

Communication Characterizing Successful Long Distance Marriages, Andrea Towers Scott
Communication Characterizing Successful Long Distance Marriages, Andrea Towers Scott
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The current study seeks to explore the communication in successful career-induced long distance marriages. Elements examined are relational dialectics, relationship satisfaction, communication satisfaction, feelings of (mis)understanding, couple types, relationship sustenance, imagined interactions, and social support. The current study has three primary contributions: 1) the quantitative exploration of a communication in a growing marital framework, 2) the successful quantification of dialectics, and 3) the overall support for studying long distance marriages. The current study reports data collected from 92 individuals in non-military career-induced long distance marriages. All participants completed an 18-page questionnaire consisting of quantitative measures for the variables listed above, …
The Bauhaus (Per)Forms, Lisa Flanagan
The Bauhaus (Per)Forms, Lisa Flanagan
LSU Master's Theses
This study uses the methods and discourses of creative/performative writing and formal aesthetics to evoke the visual aesthetic principles exercised and developed by the Bauhaus and its Stage Workshop. It explores the creative connections between visual and written forms that can affect meaning through primary, universal expression and comprehension. First, a graph links creative/performative writing and avant-garde theater concepts with related Bauhaus performance documents. This initial graph contains the key forms of visual and written expression used in the remaining sections. These further areas of inquiry include, an evocative rendering of the multiple and partial histories that include the Bauhaus, …
Can A Theory Of Interpretation Make A Difference?, George H. Taylor
Can A Theory Of Interpretation Make A Difference?, George H. Taylor
Articles
Can a theory of interpretation make a difference? The question has been posed most prominently by Judge Richard Posner, who, in recent work, has criticized the ability to make a difference of both theory writ large and of a theory of interpretation in particular. In other work I contend, contrary to Posner, that a theory of interpretation can make a difference at the level of methodology. Using the example of constitutional and statutory interpretation in law, I develop a theory that argues for the propriety and value of certain methods of interpretation over others. In the present essay, my concern …
Critical Performative Pedagogy : Augusto Boal's Theatre Of The Oppressed In The English As A Second Language Classroom, Ross Mckeehen Louis
Critical Performative Pedagogy : Augusto Boal's Theatre Of The Oppressed In The English As A Second Language Classroom, Ross Mckeehen Louis
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Performative pedagogy combines performance methods and theory with critical pedagogy in an effort to carry out the dual project of social critique and transformation. Performance offers an efficacious means of completing this project by privileging students’ historicized bodies, by implementing contingent classroom dialogue, and by exposing students to the value embedded in performance risk. In this study, I apply performative pedagogy to an English as a Second Language (ESL) context in response to its problematic pedagogical history. In particular, I argue that Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed practice should be adapted as a method for doing performative ESL pedagogy. …
