Evidence-Based Design: Documenting A Research Experiment In A School Environment With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Julie E. Irish

Purpose Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder affecting around 1:59 children. Among other characteristics, children with ASD can be unduly sensitive to elements in the built environment, such as noise or light. Despite this knowledge, to date there has been little evidence-based experimental research investigating how the environment affects them. The purpose of this paper is to conduct an experiment in a school environment with children with ASD and document the process as a model that other researchers could apply to similar studies.

For readers who may not be familiar with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) this brief guide outlines some of the major points: • The World Health Organization estimates that 1:160 children worldwide are affected by ASD but admit that data collection methods are inconsistent so this figure may be inaccurate. • The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), a US government department, has carried out more detailed data collection over several years and currently estimates that the number of children diagnosed with ASD in the United States is 1:68.

People with autism frequently have difficulty in behaving in a socially acceptable manner, for example, they may stand too close to other people in a social situation or do not observe accepted social niceties. This can lead to peer rejection and a sense of isolation. Research has been carried out to investigate whether single-user virtual environments (SVEs) could provide a suitable intervention to help those with autism learn how to communicate with others in a socially acceptable manner.
