“Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone!” Learning Intercultural Communication Through An Ethnographic Project, Yifeng Hu

As a means of enhancing students’ intercultural communication competence, as well as applying key concepts of intercultural communication, this activity uses an ethnographic approach in order to make students appreciate various ways people differ from each other. Specifically, through observation, participation, and interview, basic ethnographic methods, students immersed themselves in a culture that is different from their own, and try to understand that culture. Ultimately, students reported that they stepped out of their comfort zones during this project, which opened their eyes to a different culture. The authors present how to construct a mini-ethnographic case study design with the benefit of an ethnographic approach bounded within a case study protocol that is more feasible for a student researcher with limited time and finances. The novice researcher should choose a design that enables one to best answer the research question. Secondly, one should choose the design that assists the researcher in reaching data saturation. Finally, the novice researcher must choose the design in which one can complete the study within a reasonable time frame with minimal cost. This is particularly important for student researchers.
