Blame It On The Russians: Tracking The Portrayal Of Russians During Cyber Conflict Incidents, Athina Karatzogianni Dr

This article analyses various cyber conflicts and cyber crime incidents attributed to Russian hackers, such as the Estonian and Georgian cyber conflicts and the ‘Climategate hack’. The article argues that Russian hackers were blamed by dozens of outlets for the Climategate hack, because that was consistent with global media coverage of cyber crime incidents which portrayed Russians as highly powerful hackers responsible for many hacking incidents. This narrative also was congruent with the new Cold War rhetoric that consistently takes issue with Russia acting on its geopolitical interests. Social inequality and environmental degradation are motivating informed young people into action and connecting impoverished regions of the world with students in more developed nations. This Social Sciences senior project is to analyze an alternative development model designed by a group of Californian university students. The project, named Chimeneas de la Esperanza, is designed to help impoverished Nicaraguan women start a ceramics business. The major hurdle of this mission is to establish a market for the ceramics product. Drawing on theory by Deleuze and others on the structure of hierarchies and networks, the authors seek to reinterpret World Systems Theory in order to engage with issues of power, resistance, and conflict in the contemporary world. The authors engage with the world-systems, contemporary scholarship in global politics, and new concepts: global cities, bifurcations, hegemonic transitions, the relationship between capitalism and the state, the position of East Asia, active and reactive network movements. Since 1972, the Rainbow Family of Living Light, a nonhierarchical nomadic community, has been holding large temporary gatherings in remote forests around the world to pray for world peace and to create a model of a functioning utopian society. Wherever and whenever they gather, the temporary Rainbow city remains essentially unchanged, modeling what anarchist theorist Hakim Bey calls the Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ). Revolutions, Bey writes, seek permanent change and, in doing so, lead to violence and martyrdom. Revolutionaries aim to hold territory. Unlike many disasters that befall the Third and Fourth Worlds, the 2004 Tsunami was both large and unique enough to dominate the western press. The stories in the mainstream media, however, were rather simplistic, sticking to a feel good script of nations uniting to offer aid to the tidal wave’s unfortunate victims. Meanwhile, without much media attention, the Indonesian government used the cover of the Tsunami and the ensuing relief efforts, to intensify its war against rebels in its break-away Ache province – which suffered from the brunt of the Tsunami.
