Report Of Animal Bones From Selhagi, Mývatn District, Northern Iceland, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

In 2001 the FSl / NABO project Landscapes of Settlement in Northern Iceland collected animal bones from a stratified midden deposit associated with the abandoned site Selhagi on the property of the modern farm Haganes. Selhagi is located in the lushly vegetated lakeshore zone and its environmental setting presents a strong contrast with the eroded uplands to the S of the lake where the early sites at Sveigakot and Hrísheimur are under excavation. Close to both major migratory waterfowl nesting areas and some of the best trout fishing in Iceland, the site would appear to be optimally located for exploitation …

Gujarat Elections 2002: Vote Shares Across Regions, Srijit Mishra May 2003

Gujarat Elections 2002: Vote Shares Across Regions, Srijit Mishra

Srijit Mishra

This paper attempts to analyse in each constituency vote shares accruing to the two major parties in the state with the use of triplot or ternary diagram method. A triplot enables a two-dimensional display of three categories of shares or proportions, in this case vote shares, accruing to the BJP, Congress and ‘others’. Triplot diagrams provide a thematic representation of the fact that an increase in vote shares of BJP and to a lesser extent the Congress does have a relationship with the decline of ‘other’ contestants.

Pastoralism, Local Knowledge And Australian Aboriginal Development In Northern Queensland, Benjamin R. Smith Jan 2003

Pastoralism, Local Knowledge And Australian Aboriginal Development In Northern Queensland, Benjamin R. Smith

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Over the past three years, Indigenous policy in Australia has taken an interventionist turn. The work of Noel Pearson (see Pearson 2000), a prominent Indigenous intellectual from Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland, has provided much of the impetus for this push. As a result, the chronic social problems of the Peninsula's Aboriginal communities have become a focus of state and federal government action, driven by the recommendations of the 2001 Cape York Justice Study (Fitzgerald 2001), commissioned by the Queensland government and developed in partnership with regional Aboriginal organisations. Pearson, along with other commentators, politicians and bureaucrats, has asserted …

Evolution Of Credit Union Philosophy, Matthew Wilburn King Jan 2003

Evolution Of Credit Union Philosophy, Matthew Wilburn King

Matthew Wilburn King PhD

This paper explores the history and evolution of credit union philosophy. The evolution of credit union philosophy spans nearly 150 years. It’s a story that begins in the middle of 19th century Europe as it was emerging from a long history of feudal relations and tyrannical rule that created “the miserable economic conditions of the period and the realization that people would have to take action themselves if their lives were to improve.”1 The democratic ideals that were so eloquently articulated by classical liberal philosophers such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes began to be increasingly institutionalized during this time.

Legislative Terrorism: A Primer For The Non-Islamic State; Secularism And Different Believers, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

In industrial societies where civil law and state institutions have become well-established secular vehicles for governing the populace, it is widely assumed that the state no longer has an interest in fortifying the religious sector as a complementary source of social control. Thus, a distinction is drawn between the Islamic state that is ruled by religious law and the secular state of Western industrial societies in which religion is deemed to have lost its influence in the public sphere. This dissertation argues that civil law is not religiously neutral and thus challenges a central premise of secularization theory. Introducing a …

State Laws And The Independent Judiciary: An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Seventeenth Amendment On The Number Of Supreme Court Cases Holding State Laws Unconstitutional, Donald J. Kochan Dec 2002

State Laws And The Independent Judiciary: An Analysis Of The Effects Of The Seventeenth Amendment On The Number Of Supreme Court Cases Holding State Laws Unconstitutional, Donald J. Kochan

Donald J. Kochan

In recent years, the Seventeenth Amendment has been the subject of legal scholarship, congressional hearings and debate, Supreme Court opinions, popular press articles and commentary, state legislative efforts aimed at repeal, and activist repeal movements. To date, the literature on the effects of the Seventeenth Amendment has focused almost exclusively on the effects on the political production of legislation and competition between legislative bodies. Very little attention has been given to the potential adverse effects of the Seventeenth Amendment on the relationship between state legislatures and the federal courts. This Article seeks to fill part of that literature gap, applying …
