This research focuses on the experimentation and exploration of heat treatment used on chert by the Native Americans located in eastern Iowa after the Late-Woodland Period. In conjunction with my research advisor, Dr. Chad Heinzel, the geoarchaeologist in the UNI Department of Earth Science, I have heat treated chert from eastern Iowa in order to examine its physical and chemical changes. These experiments took place both in a controlled laboratory setting and in a semi-controlled field setting, comparing the difference between the two different methodologies. An archaeological excavation was carried out in November of 2013 on the block of 13th and Tremont Streets in the city of Cedar Falls, Blackhawk County, Iowa. The site examined was home to a late nineteenth century boiler house that powered several greenhouses on the property. Greenhouses occupy a distinctive industrial niche and have rarely been studied using an archaeological approach. Archaeology: Puzzle Of The Past: An Exhibit Design, Kristine Eyheralde

Archaeology: Puzzle of the Past is a design for a museum exhibit to better explain archaeology to the public. Its purpose is to change the audience's perspective from one of object orientation to visualization of archaeology as a process. The exhibit utilizes a chronological and concrete approach to move the visitors through the major steps in the archaeological process -- including survey, excavation, labwork, and interpretation -- as they occur within the parameters of a fictitious archaeological site. In addition, interactive exercises are designed to be included within each area to reinforce the message.
