Unto Jarvi: A Retrospective had its genesis when a young folklore graduate student, Eric Larsen, met the artist while working on a fieldwork project for Jay Anderson's course in folk art in 1981. Eric wanted to interview a local folk artist, and Unto Jarvi, who lives nearby in Auburn, Kentucky, agreed to talk with him. In the following weeks, Mr. Jarvi and Eric became close friends, and Jarvi shared rich memories of life in Finland and the United States and numerous thoughts about his painting and wood carving.
