A Matter Of Priorities: Effects Of Increased Opportunities For Extracurricular And Non-Traditional Learning Experiences On Student Time Management And Attitudes, David Spurlock, Daniel J. Bailey, Susan L. Murray, Andrew S. Ricke

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many schools are emphasizing non-traditional and extracurricular learning experiences for undergraduate engineering students. These include activities such as incorporating servicelearning projects into the classroom, involving students in design competitions (e.g., solar car, formula car races), and promoting involvement in traditional campus organizations. Often this emphasis is in response to changes in ABET requirements, desires of future employers, and needs to improve student retention. What are the effects of emphasizing these sorts of activities on student attitudes and time management decisions? We examine the influences on students' priorities for allocating their time and their perceptions of the relative importance of available …

Looking Back Without Anger: Reflections On The Boston School Crisis, Robert Wood Mar 2005

Looking Back Without Anger: Reflections On The Boston School Crisis, Robert Wood

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is taken from the unpublished autobiography of Robert Wood who served as Superintendent of Boston Public Schools from 1978 to 1980 during the difficult period when U.S. District Court Judge W. Arthur Garrity was overseeing court ordered desegregation of schools. After leaving the University of Massachusetts in January 1978, Robert Wood spent six months at the Harvard Graduate School of Education working on a book and considering a possible run for the United States Senate. Suggestion as to his next assignment, however, came from an unexpected source, as he describes below.

Reconciling Growth With History: Student Engagement And Research On The Southside Of San Antonio, John Donahue, Christine Drennon Jan 2005

Reconciling Growth With History: Student Engagement And Research On The Southside Of San Antonio, John Donahue, Christine Drennon

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

In September 2004, the San Antonio Express News reported that the Southside Independent School District (SISD) was growing faster than any other school district in San Antonio. The opening of a new Toyota manufacturing plant, the possibility of a new Texas A&M University campus, and the difficulties of further development on the north side of the city have culminated in new opportunities for urban growth on the south side of the city. While population growth is anticipated, the school districts there must prepare well in advance for the new students. Who are they? Where do they live? Where do their …

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Academic Achievement In High Ability Students: Evidence From The Wollongong Youth Study., Wilma Vialle, Patrick C. L. Heaven, Joseph Ciarrochi

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

The relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement is one that is regarded by many educators as a well-established fact. This belief has been often invoked in order to argue against the provision of ability grouping for gifted students. Refuting that commonly-held belief, this research examined the relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement in 65 high-ability secondary students, a sample drawn from a longitudinal study of over 900 students. The research demonstrated that there were no differences in measured selfesteem between the gifted and non-gifted students. More contentiously, though, the research found no correlation between self-esteem and academic achievement for the …

Designing Ethics Simulations For Uae Students, Stephanie Jones, Mark Karstad Jan 2005

Designing Ethics Simulations For Uae Students, Stephanie Jones, Mark Karstad

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The 2005-6 academic year will provide students in the UAE and across the Gulf with access to a new learning tool -- a dynamic and culturally tailored simulation on ethical decision-making. The challenge of dealing with ethical dilemmas – a key part of any Business Ethics course – can now be presented to students with the help of an interactive simulation, Managing Legal and Ethical Issues in Business. The series of three inter-connected simulations have been designed to assist students in addressing issues of firstly, cheating and academic honesty/plagiarism; secondly, discrimination in hiring practices; and finally conflict of interest …

Promoting The Students Practicum: A Cd Rom For Nursing Preceptors, Kerry Reid-Searl, Lorna Moxham Jan 2005

Promoting The Students Practicum: A Cd Rom For Nursing Preceptors, Kerry Reid-Searl, Lorna Moxham

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Students who undertake a degree that leads to a professional qualification, such as nursing, are often required to undertake a practical component in their course of study. This frequently involves the use of industry to support, mentor and assess student progress. Such a role is vitally important if the student is to achieve successful learning outcomes. In order to facilitate learning opportunities and evaluate student progress, the industry educators require knowledge to undertake the role with confidence and effectiveness. Using nursing as a case study, but acknowledging that this process is applicable to a variety of disciplines, this paper showcases …

Empowering J-Students To Think And Write In A 'Flat' World, Eric Loo Jan 2005

Empowering J-Students To Think And Write In A 'Flat' World, Eric Loo

Faculty of Creative Arts - Papers (Archive)

Australian journalism education has progressed from its vocational model. predominant in the '70s and '80s. to a somewhat hybridised form where theoretical explications sit comfortably with skills training. The past decade or so has seen a distinct body of Australian journalism practice-led research emerging, with applied journalism texts authored by local educators used widely in undergraduate and postgraduate classes. The journalism education paradigm may well soon shift, with the useful features retained and less useful ones discarded. This commentary explores some of the useful features.

Integration Of Service-Learning Into Civil And Environmental Engineering Curriculum, T. C. Piechota, Shashi S. Nambisan Jan 2005

Integration Of Service-Learning Into Civil And Environmental Engineering Curriculum, T. C. Piechota, Shashi S. Nambisan

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Service-learning is defined as integrating the community service experience of students with their academic study so that learning is enhanced. The level of student participation in community service is at an all time high as students feel the need to confront today's technical and societal problems. However, service-learning is more than community service or volunteerism. Service-learning as defined above, integrates the community service experience with the student’s academic study (note the hyphen in "service-learning" means that both are considered equal). This enhances learning which is a fundamental goal of colleges and universities. Boyer highlights the need for service-learning stating that …

Predictors Of Attitudes And Turnover Intentions In People With Disabilities: The Importance Of Means-Efficacy, Naomi Charity Schmierer Jan 2005

Predictors Of Attitudes And Turnover Intentions In People With Disabilities: The Importance Of Means-Efficacy, Naomi Charity Schmierer

Theses Digitization Project

This study surveyed 107 working college students with varying disabilities. Individual, job, and organizational characteristics were evaluated for their ability to predict job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover cognitions. One area this characteristic that was explored was that of an individual's perception of organizational resources related to legally mandated reasonable accommodations. Using hierarchal regression this study found that self-efficacy, job characteristics, and means-efficacy were key predictors of job satisfaction. Means-efficacy was the only one of these that was a predictor of turnover intentions.

Most native-born, English-speaking Americans – if they understood that developing the native language is good for English and good for longterm academic achievement – would support bilingual education. The problem is, almost none of them have heard the case. They have only heard the disinformation, coming from people who oppose these programs for extraneous (i.e., political) reasons (James Crawford, 1999).
