The Metroburb: American Values In Facebook Culture, Heather Marie Carlson Dec 2011

The Metroburb: American Values In Facebook Culture, Heather Marie Carlson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Using critical discourse analysis, fantasy themes were extracted from user profiles and postings to examine American values found in Facebook culture.

Core values found on Facebook worked to create not only socially recognizable identities enacted and communicated through the participants, but also a particular culture to which participants both reflected and contributed in Facebook. Themes and values extracted from findings indicate that Facebook users should be casual, technologically-aware, social, respectful and fair to others, “good little copers,” financially savvy while at the same time valuing higher education, a healthy lifestyle, family and travel.

Because Facebook is an interestingly fluid cultural …

Mesa 2011: Expressive Culture Of The Egyptian Revolution, Roberta L. Dougherty Nov 2011

Mesa 2011: Expressive Culture Of The Egyptian Revolution, Roberta L. Dougherty

Roberta L. Dougherty

This paper will examine the expressive culture of the Egyptian "revolution"--an event that began 25 January 2011 and reached a climax on 11 February 2011 with the resignation of Egyptian president Husni Mubarak. The outcome of this event is at this writing still unknown, however it is possible even at this early stage to examine the role of songs, poetry, political slogans, photographs, and video in communicating the movement's goals and ultimately mobilizing the Egyptian people.

The movement completely blind-sided all academic experts and even international intelligence. While the Tunisian "jasmine revolution" of early 2011 is credited as providing an …

To The Cloud! How To Compile Analyze Reference Statistics Easily And For Free, Sonnet Ireland, Faith Simmons

Sonnet Ireland

Keeping all statistics in one spreadsheet can get messy and confusing—and it leaves us vulnerable to losing our statistics in the event of technical difficulties. To organize and preserve the statistics, we copy data from Google Documents on a weekly basis into stable spreadsheets organized by month. To prevent the loss of data, we use cloud computing, saving them in a shared folder in Dropbox. We keep the original data in separate tabs, allowing us to calculate weekly and monthly totals by type of interaction, time of day, and day of the week. Using free cloud computing applications allows us …

Empowering Protest Through Social Media, Simon O'Rourke

International Cyber Resilience conference

Advances in personal communications devices including smartphones, are enabling individuals to establish and form virtual communities in cyberspace. Such platforms now allow users to be in continuous contact, enabling them to receive information in real time, which allows them to act in support of other members of their network. This paper will discuss some of the capabilities afforded by social media to protest groups focused on civil disobedience. Direct action protests are now a common sight at gatherings of world leaders, most notably the meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Seattle in 1999, the G20 meetings in Melbourne …

Media Landscape In Twitter: A World Of New Conventions And Political Diversity, Jisun An, Meeyoung Cha, Krishna Gummadi, Jon Crowcroft Jul 2011

Media Landscape In Twitter: A World Of New Conventions And Political Diversity, Jisun An, Meeyoung Cha, Krishna Gummadi, Jon Crowcroft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a preliminary but groundbreaking study of the media landscape of Twitter. We use public data on whom follows who to uncover common behaviour in media consumption, the relationship between various classes of media, and the diversity of media content which social links may bring. Our analysis shows that there is a non-negligible amount of indirect media exposure, either through friends who follow particular media sources, or via retweeted messages. We show that the indirect media exposure expands the political diversity of news to which users are exposed to a surprising extent, increasing the range by between 60-98%. These …

Expanding Planning Public Participation Outreach Through Social Networking, Wesley Brian David Harris Jun 2011

Expanding Planning Public Participation Outreach Through Social Networking, Wesley Brian David Harris

Master's Theses

Public participation is not a form of civic responsibility that it once was. With not only fewer people taking part in the public participation process, there is a trend towards an older (45 years and older) group of residents that come to such meetings or workshops. Plans, such as Specific Plans or General Plans often take years to implement and require all generations to give feedback on what is needed for the future. Additionally, within the last decade, there has been a rise in social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. These websites emerged as informal virtual places for …

“What’S Happening” @Twitter: A Uses And Gratifications Approach, Corey Leigh Ballard Jan 2011

“What’S Happening” @Twitter: A Uses And Gratifications Approach, Corey Leigh Ballard

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The uses and gratifications approach places power in the hands of the audience and is a helpful perspective when trying to understand media usage, exposure, and effects. However, while the uses and gratifications approach has been applied regularly to traditional media, research explaining why people use new social media networks as well as the gratifications they obtain from them is scarce at best. This thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the uses and gratifications approach as well as the current literature about social media networks. An argument is built within the thesis to study Twitter as one social media network …

Social Media Policies For Professional Communicators, Daxton R. Stewart Dec 2010

Social Media Policies For Professional Communicators, Daxton R. Stewart

Daxton "Chip" Stewart

As social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have become increasingly prevalent ways for people to share and connect, professional communicators have increasingly incorporated these tools into their daily practice. However, journalism, advertising and public relations practitioners have little formal guidance to help them navigate the benefits and risks of using these tools professionally. The codes of ethics of their professional fields have not been updated, and to date, social media policies have not been examined from an academic perspective. This study reviews 26 social media policies of journalism and strategic communication companies to find common themes and …
