The cultural industries (sometimes referred to as 'creative industries') are an increasingly common component of urban and regional economic development discourse, connected to an acknowledgement of the contribution of creativity to economic performance and, more generally, their power to transform images and identities for places. Such discourses have become more pervasive with a set of key books - most notably Charles Landry's The Creative City (2001), and Florida's The Rise of the Creative Class (2002) - that have become popular among both economic development planners and cultural policy makers. In this chapter we bring a distinctly geographical perspective to questions of urban cultural policy. We are interested in how perceptions (and concrete experiences) of city size and proximity shape the politics of urban cultural policymaking. The particular kind of urban cultural policymaking we discuss relates to the pervasive idea that cities ought to refashion their economic development policies and planning regimes to become "creative cities" (Landry 2000). Seeking appropriate help for early signs and symptoms of psychological distress can reduce the long-term impact of many mental disorders. This article describes practice implications and new initiatives for promoting early access and help-seeking among young people. Relevant help-seeking research is reviewed, and prominent help-seeking barriers are discussed. Prominent barriers for young people include: incomplete mental health and emotional literacy, beliefs about having little need for help versus having a need for autonomy, and the process of help-negation for different symptoms of psychological distress. SonomaWORKS was a ‘welfare to work’ program that was evaluated through grant funding from the US Department of Justice in the late 1990's. The outcomes from the research show some indication of success in moving long term welfare dependant families into full time and part time work. The core objective of this community services program was to improve the quality of life of the participants and encourage participation in the workforce. Despite numerous policy research institutes, organizations and social research in Nigeria, social outputs seem to have contributed little to policy articulation and formulation process. This feeble interface between knowledge base and policy formulation reduces the latter to a subject of intuitive judgment. This paper uses a schematic analysis approach to examine the relationship between policy space, social scientist and economy performance in Nigeria. The paper found that the input of policy research which should necessarily underscore economic reforms is inadequate and not effective.
