Social Support And The Role Of Housing For Homeless Families Involved In The Child Welfare System, Saidah Chambers
Social Support And The Role Of Housing For Homeless Families Involved In The Child Welfare System, Saidah Chambers
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigates the impact of a housing intervention for homeless families involved in the child welfare system on social support and their networks. Qualitative methods were employed in a randomized control trial of a housing intervention to examine the meaning of social support ±rom the perspective of caregivers while exploring the relation between instrumental support (e.g. advice, emotional support, and perceived support), family roles, decision making processes, and housing. Findings suggest little difference in families' perceptions of social support regardless of receiving a housing voucher; however, differences between doubled up housing arrangements and independently housed families may be …

Don’t ignore homeless veterans.
As we pause this Veterans Day to reflect on those who have sacrificed in the service of our country, let us not neglect to address the plight of those who have returned to a civilian life with far less promise than they have every right to expect. [excerpt]

Project Close At Hand: Addressing Homelessness Through Community Engagement, Kristin Wibben
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
This project examines the power of college students to positively sensitize their host community’s residents to the problem of homelessness and to implement “Project Close at Hand”, a project that focuses on breaking down the stereotypes associated with homelessness and collecting donations sufficient to save a local men’s homeless shelter from closing.
Mckinney Vento Legislation: A Policy Analysis Of The Evolution Of Homeless Law In Illinois, Cathleen J. Weber
Mckinney Vento Legislation: A Policy Analysis Of The Evolution Of Homeless Law In Illinois, Cathleen J. Weber
Theses and Dissertations
This policy analysis looks at the evolution of homeless education laws both through federal legislation and state laws. A policy analysis was utilized to show changes through the reauthorization of the McKinney-Vento Act.
One aspect of this analysis utilized qualitative data from four individual administrators in four central Illinois school districts. The qualitative data reviewed the training received by each administrator and the policies guiding their enrollment procedures.
Another aspect provided in this analysis is the changes established in response to court cases filed when school districts violated the provisions of the McKinney-Vento Act. The reauthorizations that followed each finding …

The Effect Of Victimization, Mental Health, And Protective Factors On Crime And Illicit Drug Use Among Homeless Young Adults, Kimberly A. Tyler, Lisa Kort-Butler, Alexis Swendener
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Although research has found high rates of child maltreatment, widespread victimization, and other negative outcomes among homeless youth and young adults, resiliency among this population has largely been understudied. Specifically, a gap remains in terms of how protective factors such as self-efficacy, low deviant beliefs, and religiosity operate among homeless youth and young adults. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between various forms of victimization, mental health, and protective factors with property and violent crime and illicit drug use among homeless young adults. Results from regression analyses indicate that running away from home more frequently, …

Chronically Homeless: Service Needs, Patricia Carole Beamer Ms, Sharon Ella Hodges Ms
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the service needs being met and the needs not being met as perceived by the chronically homeless who call the park their home. The authors thought this an important study to examine to better understand the service needs of the homeless. The study used a qualitative design for collecting data which involved face-to-face interviews with ten of the homeless people at the park. Four primary themes, three of which had two subthemes each, were identified through a thematic analysis. The primary theme of mistrust of services had subthemes of safety and restrictions …
Young Adult Experiences Of Homelessness: Retrospective Explorations Of Strengths And Resilience, Renee I. Hauwiller
Young Adult Experiences Of Homelessness: Retrospective Explorations Of Strengths And Resilience, Renee I. Hauwiller
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
Homelessness is a devastating experience, regardless of the stage of life in which it is experienced. For homeless young adults, the experience is particularly challenging, as what ought to be a time of exploration and self-discovery becomes a time focused on basic survival. In this research study, I explored the first-hand, lived experiences of young adults (n = 6) who experienced homelessness between the ages of 16 and 24. Using qualitative methods and a strengths perspective focus, I interviewed six young adults about the way they managed and survived homelessness. I analyzed resulting data from interview transcriptions and developed …

How People Experience The Hospital To Home Project, Britani Lalone
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
Many individuals who experience chronic homelessness with complex medical and mental health issues use the Emergency Room often. A new program called the Hospital to Home Program (HHP) has been created for people who have at least one chronic health condition, have been to the emergency room five or more times in the previous year, and have a history of chronic homelessness. This qualitative research project sought to explore the participant’s experiences of the HHP as there has been no qualitative research done with the program currently. Seven participants were asked open-ended questions to elicit responses about their quality of …

SURGE
Meet David*. In mid-January, he came to the small town Iowa elementary school where I work. David has attended more schools in the two years since he started school than I have in my lifetime. In fact, the school he just moved from only has four days of attendance listed on his record. David moves so often because he’s homeless. His situation is not what we may stereotypically think of as “homeless”—you wouldn’t see him on the streets or even in soup kitchens. Instead, David stays with his mother, and they couch surf from one home to another from week …
