Youth experiencing homelessness are significantly more likely to be victimized or exposed to traumatic experiences through their means of daily survival. This study was designed to determine how a drop-in center or similar agencies can use trauma-informed care to best assist the youth in addressing their needs. The study’s findings allow for a better understanding of the successes and challenges experienced while implementing trauma-informed care with the unique population of homeless youth. Homelessness is a devastating experience, regardless of the stage of life in which it is experienced. For homeless young adults, the experience is particularly challenging, as what ought to be a time of exploration and self-discovery becomes a time focused on basic survival. In this research study, I explored the first-hand, lived experiences of young adults (n = 6) who experienced homelessness between the ages of 16 and 24. Many individuals who experience chronic homelessness with complex medical and mental health issues use the Emergency Room often. A new program called the Hospital to Home Program (HHP) has been created for people who have at least one chronic health condition, have been to the emergency room five or more times in the previous year, and have a history of chronic homelessness. The incidence and awareness of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in the general population has become more prevalent in recent times; however, limited public knowledge and research exists regarding the prevalence of TBI among the homeless population. Through an exploratory, qualitative pilot study, this research investigated possible connections that might exist between TBI and homelessness. Nine expert respondents from various disciplines, ranging from social work to neuropsychology, were interviewed to solicit their professional impressions, opinions and experiences about this subject.
