Social Impacts Of Robotics On The Labor And Employment Market, Kelvin Espinal
Social Impacts Of Robotics On The Labor And Employment Market, Kelvin Espinal
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Robotics have been introduced into the workplace to perform tasks that human beings have traditionally fulfilled. Complementing or substituting human labor with robotics eliminates human involvement in functions attributable to hazardous environments, heavy lifting, toxic substances, and repetitive low-level tasks. On the other hand, they are meant to be more efficient and cost-effective, saving money, time, and labor. However, since the introduction of robotics in the workforce, societal opposition has been towards this branch of technology in fear of losing employment, wages, and purpose.
Previous studies have reported an overarching societal fear that adopting robotics in the workplace and industry …
The Effects Of The Social Security Amendments Of 1983 On Employment Status, Alcohol Consumption, And Depression, Adam J. Delgenio
The Effects Of The Social Security Amendments Of 1983 On Employment Status, Alcohol Consumption, And Depression, Adam J. Delgenio
Theses and Dissertations
Nearly four decades ago, Congress passed the Social Security Amendments of 1983. The changes were significant, and they pressured people to delay retirement. In this thesis, I use individual-level data from the Annual and Social Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey and the Health Retirement Study to analyze the effects of the amendments. The amendments affect individuals at the same age, but across different years. Year of birth determines treatment by the amendments. I control for year of birth and age effects in a difference-in-difference model and interact treatment with age to identify the effects of the amendments on …

Perceived Health Status, Adherence To Disease Modifying Therapy And Religious Coping In Adults With Multiple Sclerosis, Marcia P. Jones George
Perceived Health Status, Adherence To Disease Modifying Therapy And Religious Coping In Adults With Multiple Sclerosis, Marcia P. Jones George
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Purpose: People living with MS need to employ both problem and emotion-focused coping strategies to maintain optimal health. Specifically, with one’s Perceived Health Status as an indicator of optimal health, treatment adherence and religious coping are indicators of problem and emotion-focused coping, respectively. This study aimed to examine the relations between Perceived Health Status, the dependent variable, and the independent variables Adherence to DMT and Religious Coping. Based on the Neuman Systems Model (Neuman & Fawcett, 2011) and Pargament's Theory of Religious Coping (1997), it was proposed that Adherence to DMT and Religious Coping are respectively one's physiological and spiritual …
Work-Family Reconciliation Policies Reexamined: Good Or Bad For Gender And Class Inequality In Employment Across Twenty-Four High-Income Countries?, Sarah L. Kostecki
Work-Family Reconciliation Policies Reexamined: Good Or Bad For Gender And Class Inequality In Employment Across Twenty-Four High-Income Countries?, Sarah L. Kostecki
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I am in conversation with the small but influential gendered tradeoffs literature. First, multidimensional, disaggregated, and precise policy measures were developed for two of the most widely studied work-family reconciliation policies—leave and ECEC. I constructed a comprehensive set of leave and ECEC policy measures for 24 high-income countries using secondary and country-specific sources. The goal was to determine which countries provide leave and ECEC policies that are “well-developed” across multiple policy dimensions. The new measures were then used in combination with the LIS microdata to reevaluate the gendered tradeoffs hypothesis—whether well-developed leave and ECEC support women’s employment …

Hiring Candidates With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd): Effects Of Diagnostic Disclosure And Presence Of Asd Behaviors On Employability Ratings, Geetanjali Sugrim
Student Theses and Dissertations
Despite the increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses and organizational emphasis on workplace diversity, limited information is known about how disclosure of an ASD diagnosis and presence of ASD behaviors impact perceived employability in an interview setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate these factors using an experimental design. Participants were 258 students (Mage = 21.9 years, SD = 5.1; 56% female; 75% non-White) at an urban public college who completed questionnaires on ASD knowledge and stereotypes and evaluated employability of vignette characters interviewing for a job interview. Vignettes varied across two dimensions: ASD disclosure …
Employment Duration And Attrition Of Federal And State Inspectors General In The United States, Frank Chen
Employment Duration And Attrition Of Federal And State Inspectors General In The United States, Frank Chen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A recent report by the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) on inspector general (IG) attrition found growing rates of IG vacancies within federal Offices of Inspectors General (OIGs) (Johnson, 2018). This study identified the growing rates of Acting IGs (AIGs) and their role as interim IGs negatively affect their offices, decreasing productivity, and increasing difficulty in meeting quality inspection and oversight standards. This dissertation identified and analyzed rates of IG employment duration and attrition in federal and state offices of inspectors general (OIG) between 2001 and 2017, starting with a comprehensive review on IG literature and their responsibilities. A …
Broad Skill Focused Job Seeking: A Study Of Intervention And Employment Outcomes, Eric A. Knudsen
Broad Skill Focused Job Seeking: A Study Of Intervention And Employment Outcomes, Eric A. Knudsen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The job search has been the subject of research across many disciplines adopting varied perspectives. However, the industrial-organizational psychology literature on the job search has failed to properly consider the role of individual differences in thought about the utility of job skills independent of context. This dissertation is an attempt to establish and study the construct of broad skill focus- the extent to which individuals adopt a perspective and understanding of the broader generalizability of their work skills, versus their context-specific applications (i.e., the settings in which they were learned). As no measurement tool exists for studying this construct, Study …

Effectiveness Of Social Work Reentry Programs At Preventing Recidivism, Daniel C. Grijalva
Publications and Research
Each year in the United States, thousands of individuals are released from prisons and must reintegrate into society. Ensuring these individuals obtain adequate employment upon release is key to keeping them from returning to the penal system. This paper examines different social work programs that attempt to secure employment for ex-offenders. This paper reviews the obstacles these programs face and considers how social workers can improve the effectiveness of these programs at preventing recidivism. This paper acknowledges that some of these programs have achieved moderate success in preventing recidivism but recognizes the need to research current programs’ methodologies so that …

Working For Food Stamps: Economic Citizenship And The Post-Fordist Welfare State In New York City, Maggie Dickinson
Working For Food Stamps: Economic Citizenship And The Post-Fordist Welfare State In New York City, Maggie Dickinson
Publications and Research
In the United States, the number of people receiving state-subsidized food aid has risen dramatically since 2001. This increase complicates the well-worn story that the post-Fordist welfare state has been continuously cut back in the neoliberal era, indicating instead that it is expanding to subsidize poor workers’ participation in the formal labor market. In New York City, welfare office workers operationalize policies that ease access to food assistance for poor workers who can demonstrate that they are formally employed. Meanwhile, workfare programs punish the unemployed and marginal workers by making them work for food stamps. This conservative, paternalistic welfare regime …
