This literature review examines the concept of body as home in terms of privilege versus human right. This thesis is a literature review examining the repercussions of the traumatized mind, body, nervous system, memory, and soul. Thirty percent of all women worldwide will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime (WHO, 2019). IPV is damaging to the body and mind, and impacts every area of a woman’s life, and frequently results in trauma (Murray, et al., 2017). The seriousness and prevalence of intimate partner violence clearly warrants research into effective treatments. Consequently, this literature review examines existing arts-based interventions that address the symptomology of trauma and how those interventions could specifically benefit victim-survivors of IPV. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a traumatic experience that requires trauma informed care. Because trauma effects the body and often places a survivor in a state of flight, fight or freeze, it is important that the body be involved in recovery from IPV. This includes stabilization of the body’s physical responses to trauma, which is part of the first phase of trauma recovery—safety. Through a review of the literature on trauma treatment, IPV programs, and body-based therapies such as dance/movement therapy (D/MT) and somatic psychotherapy (SP), stabilization that addresses the body is found to be an important part of trauma …

This thesis was originally concerned with the use of expressive arts therapy with Latinx survivors of domestic violence. As the author carried out the review of literature, she began to encounter fundamental issues in the way that the Latinx community is approached in research. Instead of carrying out a traditional review of literature, the author approached the literature through three main questions: "Who is the research about?," "Who is the research by?,” and "Who is the research for?"
