Through interviews with violence against women (VAW) workers (n=14), the present study examined workers’ perspectives of risk factors and the challenges in assessing risk for women experiencing domestic violence (DV) in rural locations. The present study also examined what promising practices VAW workers are utilizing when working with women experiencing DV in rural locations. Qualitative analysis indicated several risk factors including the location (i.e., geographic isolation, lack of transportation, and lack of community resources) and cultural factors (i.e., accepted and more available use of firearms, poverty, and no privacy/anonymity). Domestic violence and homicide can be reduced when victims seek effective and timely assistance or friends, family and community professionals offer support. One important factor in help-seeking is a victim’s intuitive sense of fear. Several factors related to this fear were examined including the presence of children in the home, perpetrator’s controlling behaviours, and mental health and/or addiction concerns of victims of DH. A retrospective case analysis was performed using domestic homicide case data reviewed by the Domestic Violence Death Review Committee (DVDRC) in Ontario, Canada. Domestic violence is a critical human rights issue that can escalate to cases of domestic homicide. Globally, approximately 30% of women in relationships have reported experiencing violence at the hands of an intimate partner. In Canada this pattern is echoed, as over 25% of police-reported violent offences were from victims of domestic abuse. Recent research has revealed that immigrant & refugee victims experience unique risk factors that may render them more vulnerable to this form of violence. Gender-based violence is rooted in a network of multidimensional constructs encompassing personal, situational, social and cultural elements, as well as the intersectionality of these elements. Current research on victims of domestic homicide has not incorporated the use of this lens and has had a tendency to focus on a singular construct as independent and autonomous. The present study explored 20 dimensions of victim vulnerability. Cases from the Ontario Domestic Violence Death Review Committee were analyzed to examine the presence and frequency of these dimensions within the sample. Domestic violence (DV) is associated with negative consequences for victims, children, families, and even national economies. More recently, research has demonstrated that DV also has a serious impact on workers and workplaces. The present study examined pre-service teachers’ attitudes and behaviours toward reporting child exposure to domestic violence. Domestic violence exposure is defined as being within sight or sound of violence (Edleson et al., 2007). Due to their daily contact, teachers are in a unique position of being able to recognize children who are exposed to domestic violence, as they are amongst the first individuals to recognize warning signs and changes in behaviour including appearance, attitude, and academic performance (Byrne & Taylor, 2007). Examining Risk: Profiles Of Adult Male Perpetrators Of Intimate Partner Violence, Carolyn Carrier

The purpose of this study was to examine risk profiles presented by men who have assaulted their partner versus those who have killed their partner in an act of intimate partner violence (N =526). Three groups of men were examined: men who have killed (DVDRC) and men involved in a batterer intervention program (BIP) either post-adjudication (CO) or as a part of a specialized pre-adjudication (EI) program for domestic violence offences. Twenty risk factors were compared across the three groups. Primary findings of the study suggest that men who kill their partners are different than men who did not and …
