Ai In Universities And Libraries, Aaron Tay

Research Collection Library

Everyone is familiar with ChatGPT. But can ChatGPT alone be used for information retrieval? In this Keynote speech, Aaron argues that ChatGPT or similar large language models alone is not sufficient for information retrieval. As databases such as Scopus, Dimensions announce new beta search tools that leverage generative AI, he provides a overview of how these tools that blend search with generative AI (large language models) work (using a technique known as Retrieval Augmented Generation or RAG) and explains the pros and cons of this new class of search tools.

He ends with a prediction of what the next 3 …

Demystifying The Scholarly Publishing Landscape, Eleta Exline, Emily Poworoznek, Patricia Condon

University Library Scholarship

The scholarly publishing landscape has grown exponentially in size, scope and complexity within the last decade. Since the number and type of publishing outlets have exploded, researchers now need to consider practical and ethical issues such as predatory journals, open access, preprints, publishing data and sponsor obligations when making publication decisions. Further, these issues may be compounded by interdisciplinary research collaborations. Presenters will provide an overview of the contemporary scholarly publishing landscape and the different components. They will also help researchers identify key questions to ask during different stages of the research process, highlight differences that may bear on interdisciplinary …

Digital scholarship of the 21st century transcends institutions and borders with its freedom from print and physical locations. This case study reviews aspects of establishing a sustainable digital scholarship center, supporting open access through the institutional repository (K-State Research Exchange - K-REx) and an open access publishing platform (New Prairie Press – NPP) along with other outreach efforts. The Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship (CADS) at K-State Libraries serves our campus community, but digital scholarship extends K-State's impact far beyond Manhattan, Kansas. Highlighting the scholarship at our campus is only one small piece of the landscape. Collaboration on …

Linking Old Librarianship To New: Aligning 5-Steps Of The Innovator's Dna In Creating Thematic Discovery Systems For The Everglades, L. Bryan Cooper, Margarita Perez Martinez

Works of the FIU Libraries

This poster presentation from the May 2015 Florida Library Association Conference, along with the Everglades Explorer discovery portal at http://ee.fiu.edu, demonstrates how traditional bibliographic and curatorial principles can be applied to: 1) selection, cross-walking and aggregation of metadata linking end-users to wide-spread digital resources from multiple silos; 2) harvesting of select PDFs, HTML and media for web archiving and access; 3) selection of CMS domains, sub-domains and folders for targeted searching using an API.

Choosing content for this discovery portal is comparable to past scholarly practice of creating and publishing subject bibliographies, except metadata and data are housed in …

The Nyu Survey Service: Promoting Value In Undergraduate Education, Samantha Guss, David M. Mcgarry, Jason B. Phillips

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

New York University's Data Service Studio has recently launched the NYU Survey Service, whose ultimate aim is to support the development and administration of surveys of all types. For the web-based component, we utilize a product called Qualtrics, which allows university affiliates to develop and administer web-based surveys. This article describes the process by which we at NYU came to offer the service during a time when concerns abound about the ability of libraries to support and expand services while still meeting service imperatives such as robust data services. While many considerations went into this evaluation and the ultimate conclusion …
