Looking Good And Taking Care: Consumer Culture, Identity, And Poor, Minority, Urban Tweens, Elizabeth Edgecomb

Looking Good and Taking Care: Consumer Culture, Identity, and Poor, Minority, Urban Tweens is an ethnographic examination of how poor, minority, urban tweens (age 7-14) use consumer culture to create and perform their personal and social identities. Although portrayed in mass media as selfish and hedonistic, this work finds tweens creating profoundly social, giving, and caring identities and relationships through consumption. Their use of consumer culture is also a form of political resistance that subverts their place in the age, class, and race hierarchy. This paper discusses the theoretical rationale for an empirical study of organisational change arising from introduction of electronic nursing documentation in residential aged care facilities. The study draws on a processual view of organisational change, which is related to the theory of complex adaptive systems. First we review existing literature on electronic nursing documentation with an organisational focus to provide a context to help outline the research aims of the present study. Background: Chronic diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Their effects can be mitigated by high quality evidence‐based care, but this is not the norm in most systems. The Chronic Care Model (CCM) is an evidence‐based policy response to this practice gap, which uses multiple strategies to promote the quality of chronic care. Objective: To review CCM with an ethical lens. Methods: We reviewed the published empirical and non‐empirical articles of CCM to analyse the ethical underpinnings of this model. Childcare (also called day care or preschool) has generally served three purposes: to care for children while parents are employed; to provide early childhood education; and to cater to the needs of poor and disadvantaged children. This article proposes that the welfare approach to childcare be augmented by a social investment approach to enhance human and social capital investments among low income families and communities and to contribute to wider social development goals. The Head Start program in the United States and the Integrated Child Development Scheme in India are used to illustrate this argument.

PURPOSE. To examine the deposition of tear phospholipids and cholesterol onto worn contact lenses and the effect of lens material and lens care solution. METHODS. Lipids were extracted from tears and worn contact lenses using 2: 1 chloroform: methanol and the extract washed with aqueous ammonium acetate, before analysis by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). RESULTS. Twenty-three molecular lipids from the sphingomyelin (SM) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) classes were detected in tears, with total concentrations of each class determined to be 5 +/- 1 pmol/mu L (similar to 3.8 mu g/mL) and 6 +/- 1 pmol/mu L (similar to 4.6 …

Industry is increasingly demanding graduates that are work ready. Preparing students that are not only technically competent but that also display the necessary soft skills for industry, presents a challenge for higher education. Experiential learning programs can offer students the opportunity to develop these skills and practice discipline knowledge, however for program sustainability higher education must meet the needs of its key stakeholders. This paper presents an intensive internship program that aims to supportively transition students into industry, while focusing on key stakeholder engagement.
