Risky Business: An Examination Of Probation Officers' Attitudes Towards Risk Assessment, Michelle Richardson
Risky Business: An Examination Of Probation Officers' Attitudes Towards Risk Assessment, Michelle Richardson
Dissertations
Over the past ten years, the concept of risk has moved to centre stage in criminological spheres. Risk assessment and the concern for effective management of offenders while safe guarding public safety has become a core issue for criminal justice agencies. This research focuses on risk assessment and probation practice in Ireland. In particular, the attitudes of practicing basic grade probation officers' working on adult community teams in Dublin are examined to gain insight into the complexities experienced by probation officers. Specifically, the research aims to highlight the consequences of adopting standardised risk tools on probation practice. The research discusses …

Shifting Baselines and New Meridians: Water, Resources, Landscapes, and the Transformation of the American West (Summer Conference, June 4-6)
The Center’s 29th annual conference will focus on the changes in the West resulting from rapid population growth, development, disrupted historical weather patterns and the effects of those changes on land, water, and energy resources. The agenda includes panel discussions that will address:
- Water for the 21st Century —the big questions in Western water and rethinking Western water law.
- The Future of Energy —practical and sophisticated solutions to overcome the energy …
Cumulating Evidence About The Social Animal: Meta-Analysis In Social-Personality Psychology, Blair T. Johnson Dr., Marcella H. Boynton Dr.
Cumulating Evidence About The Social Animal: Meta-Analysis In Social-Personality Psychology, Blair T. Johnson Dr., Marcella H. Boynton Dr.
CHIP Documents
Like most scientific fields, social-personality psychology has experienced an
explosion of research related to such central topics as aggression, attraction, gender,
group processes, motivation, personality, and persuasion, to name a few. The
proliferation of research can be a monster unless it is tamed with the scientific
review strategy of meta-analysis, literally analyses of past analyses that produce
a quantitative and empirical history of research on a particular phenomenon. The
purpose of this article is to outline the basic process and statistics of meta-analysis,
as they pertain to social-personality psychology. Meta-analysis involves: (i) defining
the problem under review; (ii) gathering qualified …
Linking Attitudes And Demographics In A Tourist Segmentation Model - A Two-Stage Approach, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong, Kenneth E. Miller
Linking Attitudes And Demographics In A Tourist Segmentation Model - A Two-Stage Approach, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong, Kenneth E. Miller
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Segmentation has been widely studied in tourism research e.g. Dolnicar (2004). Dawley (2006) points that commonly used segmentation variables such as demographics lead to identifiable segments which are not actionable while other useful approaches e.g. psychographics, are actionable but not identifiable. The objective of this paper is to develop a two-stage linkage approach to segmentation whereby cluster analysis using psychographic variables is conducted within demographic group. Demographic groups are selected based on propensity to travel. This research utilizes data generated from a cross-sectional self-completed survey of 49,105 Australian respondents on travel and tourism. The managerial usefulness of this segmentation is …
Network Structure, Ict Use And Performance Attitudes Of Knowledge Workers, Kon Shing Kenneth Chung, Liaquat Hossain
Network Structure, Ict Use And Performance Attitudes Of Knowledge Workers, Kon Shing Kenneth Chung, Liaquat Hossain
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
In this study, we examine the effect of social network structure and information and communication technologies (ICT) use on performance attitudes of knowledge-intensive workers in dispersed occupational communities. We first develop a theoretical framework and use it to develop a valid and reliable survey instrument. Secondly, we apply structural hole measures (constraint and efficiency) for exploring the association with ICT use and attitudes to performance. Empirical results suggest that density of knowledge workers' professional network is positively associated with ICT use whereas network efficiency is negatively correlated with ICT use at both task and communication-structure level. The findings show that …
The Nature Of ‘Reporter Voice' In A Vietnamese Hard News Story, V. T. H. Tran, Elizabeth Thomson
The Nature Of ‘Reporter Voice' In A Vietnamese Hard News Story, V. T. H. Tran, Elizabeth Thomson
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
This chapter investigates the attitude of the reporter in an article about Iraq war published in a newspaper in Vietnam, the Nhan Dan Daily. Appraisal theory, especially attitude and engagement, is used as the tools of analysis to explore the reporter’s opinions and ideological positioning expressed in the article. The analysis reveals the reporter’s negative attitude towards US government as well as the strategies used to engage other parties in support of the reporter’s point of view.
