Increasing Patron’S Outreach And Engagement Through Relationship Marketing: A Case Study, Margaret Adeogun

Faculty Publications

Increased diversity, demographics, and population shifts in higher education have led many academic libraries to reexamine their marketing efforts and adopt strategies that promote relationships and inclusivity. This requirement has become more prominent among libraries serving a highly diverse user community, particularly in a more racially and ethnically diverse campus. Adopting a marketing model that cultivates more meaningful long-term relationships with customers ensures long-term satisfaction and loyalty to the library brand. Using marketing and promotional examples from the James White Library, this article addresses the academic library’s relationship marketing strategy in an increasingly multicultural higher education environment.

Documenting An Open Future In A Post-Policy World, Caitlin Harrington, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This session continues the work of a 2019 survey that investigated library policies related to Open Access (OA). Specifically, this study sought to address the self-selection of participants by randomly selecting and directly contacting academic librarians at libraries within one of four different Carnegie classifications to request input on their library’s collection development policies and the existence of OA policies or informal practices related to library collections. The findings surface disparities in the documentation of OA collection practices among institution classifications and highlight concerns about both OA and policies in the collections strategies of academic libraries.

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

The goal of academic and public libraries is to support the community by contributing to life-long learning, access, and knowledge. However, the feelings produced by these institutions are dissimilar although both use similar practices to reach their communities. Researchers administered surveys and interviews at a university to understand Latinx students’ perceptions of the academic library. Many of the questions inquired about their feelings towards public libraries as well as cultural affirmation wishes they wanted implemented in academic libraries. In our proposed presentation, we will share how Latinx students view public and academic libraries in relation to their culture and ethnicity.

In March 2018, the Board of Directors of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) approved a new mission statement that includes a call to “promote equity and diversity” and lists “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) as one of its four priorities. ARL encourages but does not mandate similar visible commitments from its member institutions. This is evident by the resource webpage that ARL maintains entitled, “ARL Library Statements and Signs Affirming Our Core Beliefs.” The listed members represent approximately 19% of ARL’s membership. After reading the existing statements, the authors noticed a similar pattern in terms and context. This led …
