Facilitating Role Understanding And Collaboration Between Aspiring School Counselors And Principals, Shelby K. Gonzales, Dodie Limberg, Kathleen M. W. Cunningham

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using a convergent mixed-methods design, we investigated role understanding and collaboration between school counselors and principals. Specifically, this study situated aspiring school counselors and principals in a curriculum intervention on the role of their counterpart and then brought the two professions together in a collaborative powerful learning experience. The results of our pilot study demonstrate that both school counselor and educational leadership graduate students benefit from and value a presentation on roles of their opposite counterpart and the opportunity to practice collaboration in their graduate preparation programs.

Intergroup Contact And White Racial Apathy: Findings From The National Study Of Youth And Religion (Nsyr), Tony N. Brown, Asia Bento, Julian Culver, Raul S. Casarez, Horace J. Duffy Iii Dec 2022

Intergroup Contact And White Racial Apathy: Findings From The National Study Of Youth And Religion (Nsyr), Tony N. Brown, Asia Bento, Julian Culver, Raul S. Casarez, Horace J. Duffy Iii

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Scholars theorize racial apathy is one form contemporary white racial prejudice takes. Racial apathy signals not caring about racial inequality. Invoking intergroup contact theory, we hypothesize interracial contact would predict less racial apathy among whites. To test our hypothesis, we analyze survey data from white teenagers participating in the 2003 National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR). We find interracial contact matters and its inclusion improves model fit over and above previously specified correlates. Specifically, interracial friendship and dating, and having a different race mentor predict the tendency to care about racial equality. Furthermore, any interracial contact and a count …

Sustainable Deimplementation Of Continuous Pulse Oximetry Monitoring In Children Hospitalized With Bronchiolitis: Study Protocol For The Eliminating Monitor Overuse (Emo) Type Iii Effectiveness-Deimplementation Cluster-Randomized Trial, Nathaniel J. Williams

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Methods of sustaining the deimplementation of overused medical practices (i.e., practices not supported by evidence) are understudied. In pediatric hospital medicine, continuous pulse oximetry monitoring of children with the common viral respiratory illness bronchiolitis is recommended only under specific circumstances. Three national guidelines discourage its use for children who are not receiving supplemental oxygen, but guideline-discordant practice (i.e., overuse) remains prevalent. A 6-hospital pilot of educational outreach with audit and feedback resulted in immediate reductions in overuse; however, the best strategies to optimize sustainment of deimplementation success are unknown.

Methods: The Eliminating Monitor Overuse (EMO) trial will compare two …

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

TeachTheraBridge is the domain name for the website I created called Bridge to Healing and Learning. The purpose of the website is to share my big idea about creating a therapeutic school experience for children and youth with adverse childhood experiences, developmental trauma, and mental illness”.

I have asked the question, “What would happen if we combined school and therapy using a Reggio Emilia approach in specialized local classrooms and/or in a comprehensive day treatment center?” The website explores this question and goes into depth about the Reggio approach and about therapies to integrate into the school day. The website …

Required Sample Size To Detect Mediation In 3-Level Implementation Studies, Nathaniel J. Williams, Kristopher J. Preacher, Paul D. Allison, David S. Mandell, Steven C. Marcus

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Statistical tests of mediation are important for advancing implementation science; however, little research has examined the sample sizes needed to detect mediation in 3-level designs (e.g., organization, provider, patient) that are common in implementation research. Using a generalizable Monte Carlo simulation method, this paper examines the sample sizes required to detect mediation in 3-level designs under a range of conditions plausible for implementation studies.

Method: Statistical power was estimated for 17,496 3-level mediation designs in which the independent variable (X) resided at the highest cluster level (e.g., organization), the mediator (M) resided at the intermediate …

Sensation Seeking And Adolescent Drinking: Do Protective Behavioral Strategies Lower Risk?, Diana M. Doumas, G. Michael Russo, Raissa Miller, Susan Esp, Nadine R. Mastroleo, Rob Turrisi

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using a cross-sectional design, we examined protective behavioral strategies (PBS) as a moderator of the relationship between sensation seeking and hazardous drinking and alcohol-related consequences among high school seniors (N = 212). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated sensation seeking was a significant predictor of binge drinking (β = 0.65, p < 0.001), prepartying (β = 0.71, p < 0.001), gaming (β = 0.75, p < 0.001), and alcohol-related consequences (β = 0.69, p < 0.001). Further, PBS moderated these relationships such that among high sensation seeking adolescents, PBS use was associated with better outcomes, including lower levels of binge drinking (β = −0.37, p < 0.01), prepartying (β = −0.44, p < 0.01), gaming (β = −0.31, p < 0.05), and alcohol-related consequences (β = −0.53, p < 0.001). We discuss counseling implications, including assessment and harm reduction strategies focusing on PBS to reduce hazardous drinking among high sensation seeking adolescents.

The main problems the shelters are facing are overpopulation and negative environments. The foster care takers are struggling with a lack of resources, which is anything from education to connecting to other foster care takers. After researching the main problems, the best solution was creating a website that provides solutions and can be accessed at any time.

Diversity And Engagement In Supplemental Elementary Art Education, Maggie Espinoza Sennesael Oct 2022

Diversity And Engagement In Supplemental Elementary Art Education, Maggie Espinoza Sennesael

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

In this project, I identified two main issues in standard elementary level art education through consultation with a teacher (second grade, public school), and research. These issues are the apparent lack of diversity in the selection of artists that are included in lessons, as well as a tendency for children’s art activities to be oversimplified or limited in regard to their potential for creative expression and overall engagement. In an effort to address these two issues, I designed and assembled an educational resource (digital lesson/activity book) that would include a diverse range of artists for students to learn about as …

Conflict, Technology, And Integrative Thinking: The Past And Future Of Geopolitical Conflict, Paul L. Johnson

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Conflict is constantly evolving, and it is evolving even faster now that the world finds itself in an age where information travels at the speed of light. Scholars of military doctrine and generational warfare are currently pondering the effects of cyber warfare on the already hectic and confusing fourth generation battlespace. Invariably, generals, pundits and politicians alike in countries across the world vie to acquire these “capabilities” for their benefit and the benefit of their nation. The last time a cutting-edge advance in kinetic weaponry was made in the form of the atomic bomb, hundreds of thousands of civilian lives …

The Simplicity Of Connecting With Our Children, Mindy M. Salcido Oct 2022

The Simplicity Of Connecting With Our Children, Mindy M. Salcido

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Connecting with our children is something that many parents struggle with but often overthink. It is often through being purposeful and present that we create times to connect. To help parents and children find fun ways to connect, I wrote a book showing a mom and son doing everyday activities together. In addition to completing a reading of this book to local families in my community, I also created a brochure that provided a list of activities as well as some of the benefits of connecting with our children. At the completion of the reading event, we had a Q …

Digital Transformation And Higher Education, Teresa M. Amos Oct 2022

Digital Transformation And Higher Education, Teresa M. Amos

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Digital Transformation (Dx) is defined as “a series of deep and coordinated culture, workforce, and technology shifts that enable new educational and operating models and transform an institution’s operations, strategic directions, and value proposition” (Radhakrishnan, 2022). This definition doesn’t mean that it is just for information technology departments in higher education to learn and deploy. But it is an overall cultural and business analysis of a university or college to make sure that the technology investments in an institution align with goals of the institution with student success endeavors as a key measurement.

Unfortunately, it is often lost on many …
