Mapping South Central Minnesota: An Aerial Photograph Digitization Project, Heidi J. Southworth

In 2021, a team consisting of Evan Rusch (Government Documents/Reference and Instruction Librarian), Nicole Smith (Maps Technician), Heidi Southworth (Digital Initiatives Librarian), and student workers Britney Hartmann, Samuel Lemma, Jasmyne Fisher began digitization of 27,441 unique aerial photographs. These aerial photographs are from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) District 7 covering south central Minnesota from 1957-2006. They are housed in the Dr. Mary T. Dooley Map Library at Minnesota State University, Mankato. These photographs are heavily utilized by students and faculty in our geography and engineering departments and by other researchers who visit our campus. Through digitization, we have …

As part of a textbook affordability initiative, the University of Central Florida Libraries sought ways to inform students that hundreds of required textbooks are available for free as library eTextbooks. When other methods did not include necessary information such as a link to the eTextbook or other details, a secondary method was investigated: creating an eTextbook Portal. An eTextbook Portal serves as a searchable webpage to help students locate eTextbooks that match their courses. A collaboration between the institutional repository, textbook affordability, and web services produced this creative solution to organize and share information for each eTextbook using Digital Commons …

All You Need Is Time: Leveraging Technology And Training To Reorganize Library Staff, Tiffany Garrett

In 2022, the Roseman University of Health Sciences Library went through several major changes. We implemented an RFID self-checkout system, opened the library space for access outside of staffed hours, and reorganized library staff to better serve our campus population. This presentation will cover the justification for the changes, implementation process, and results from the first two months of working with the new model.

Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. This presentation details remediation work done on harmful legacy metadata as part of the Syracuse University Libraries digital collections migration of the Sideshow Performers Collection, which contains digitized images from the Ronald G. Becker Collection of Charles Eisenmann photographs. The discussion focuses on deconstructing the legacy information and reconstructing it in ways that center the individual performer depicted, rather than portraying them as a medicalized specimen.

Reaching high school students before they set foot on campus would allow writing centers to increase awareness of services while also making personal connections to students, which has been proven to increase student retention. Targeting these students can be difficult and expensive, but our writing center collaborated with library services and our admissions office to create a program about finding scholarship opportunities/writing scholarship essays that was inexpensive, targeted local high schools, and initial results indicate that this program is beneficial to our university’s recruitment efforts. We will discuss our findings and how this program could be replicated by other institutions.

A distillation of tips from the state/provincial fire preparedness agencies will be presented. Recommendations for programming for public libraries to build bridges with fire educators are offered, along with ideas on how to display materials that might describe what important papers should be in go-bags, how to drive out of a wildfire, and how to have a game plan for home, work, daycare, kids, and critters. Provincial and state specific resources will be included in a pathfinder, along with a selection of titles of books, articles, and websites about fire awareness.

In an effort to improve retention and promote library services to new incoming students, the Sherrod Library staff at East Tennessee State University discussed different ideas and decided to expand the Lending Technology Program & Personal Librarian (PL) program to include First Generation and Transfer students. To help decrease library anxiety, students received by email a weekly newsletter of events and workshops happening in the library. Small-scale, residential solar systems have been increasingly recognized as a key sector of future solar capacity growth and carbon emission reduction in cities. This study investigated customer preferences of solar thermal and photovoltaic (PV) systems to facilitate their broader residential penetration. A discrete choice experiment was designed and administered through Amazon Mechanical Turk targeting two testbeds: Boston, Massachusetts and Atlanta, Georgia. Six system features were investigated, including system type, ownership, upfront cost, annual savings, environmental benefits, and neighbor’s choices. Successful Women Majoring In Stem Have Higher Optimism And Lower Stigma Consciousness, Bridget Muise, Bettina Casad

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Women are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. We had 607 women majoring in STEM complete an online questionnaire reporting levels of coping, rejection sensitivity, stigma consciousness, and optimism and grade point average (GPA) was collected from school records. Results showed that higher rejection sensitivity predicts lower GPA even with higher coping skills. This indicates that even with good coping skills, higher fear of rejection for one's gender had a stronger effect on the academic performance of women in STEM. Additionally, higher optimism predicts higher GPA, but only for women with lower gender stigma consciousness. Optimism seems …

Using the lenses of structural, systems, cultural, and political theory-based metaphors, a team of academic library leaders made informed and strategic decisions targeted at improving specific aspects of their organization. This resulted in improvements to the culture and structure of the organization as well as a better understanding of the political and systems influences at play. The lenses will be presented visually through illustrative metaphors such as through eyeglasses with a jungle in focus and described as applicable for most library organizations.

Through elements of sound and movement, tap dance employs rhythm as a universal language for nonverbal communication through the medium of music. Through three distinct but related elements, (a literature review, an artist’s statement, and a performance piece), this thesis will explore tap dance as a form of nonverbal language. For individuals with autism spectrum disorder, tap dance may help to achieve further attunement with themselves and the outside world. Due to autistic people’s impaired communicative, interactional, and skilled abilities, experiencing the relationships formed through tap dance may facilitate improvement.
