“Pandemic Brain,” Burnout, And 2022, Olivia R. Smith Schlinck

Library Staff Online Publications

In my first post, I wrote about the big feelings our students might be grappling with and how to approach the semester carefully, with kindness and grace. Lately I’ve been asking myself: how do we do the same for ourselves? Something about this moment – this month, this semester, this year, you pick – feels. . . off. People are stressed, depressed, or entirely burnt out. People are quitting their jobs at higher-than-average rates and having trouble focusing on their work, feeling overwhelmed and distracted. It’s almost 2022 and people are still struggling with processing 2020.

Covid-19 Impacts On Electronic Resource Usage At A Regional University, Daniel Moody, Rickey D. Best

The Southeastern Librarian

An analysis of electronic resource usage at a regional university in the southeast during the COVID-19 pandemic showed interesting results. While it was anticipated that movement to online instruction would increase usage of electronic resources, it was discovered that overall usage actually declined for those resources. Virtual reference transactions, however, increased during the pandemic. When meas-uring downloads of full-text of both journals and e-Books in the health sciences, humanities, social sci-ences, and physical sciences, it was discovered that the first three subject areas showed a double digit percentage decline in use, with only the physical sciences showing a decline of …

Law Students, Covid-19, And Big Feelings, Olivia R. Smith Schlinck

Library Staff Online Publications

It’s Fall 2021 and well . . . we’re back. Or rather – some of us are. Along with a patchwork of universities requiring vaccinations and/or masks for students comes a patchwork of modes of instruction: fully online, hybrid, fully in-person (and subject to change). Some employees have shifted to occasional work-from-home models while others are required to be in-person every day. It’s all very complicated. Honestly, right now everything is complicated. With big, complicated situations come big, complicated feelings, and our students’ feelings are certainly that: big.

There remained 34 full-text papers that were assessed for eligibility. Only 13 of these studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria to provide information on university library services in the pandemic era. PRISMA guidelines are followed in this study.

One of these is older adults, or adults age 65 and over. Surveys by various organizations ranging from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration to the Pew Research Center have identified systemic disparities such as income, geography, and education level as leading factors in the digital divide. These disparities further compound with age, race, ethnicity, language, and ability to keep some groups at a disadvantage when …

Works of the FIU Libraries

To respond proactively to the pandemic, the Libraries moved many services and programs online. Providing online services is nothing new for librarians; using the technologies available to replicate and improve on the outcomes these services have on student learning has required creativity and new ways of thinking. To this end, we have increased our use of Zoom, Slack, and YouTube to offer support, allowing students to interact in ways that mimic F2F library services. To increase visibility we adapted popular events to an online modality such as Language Day conversations and open mic events to enrich student engagement. Several unique …

University Libraries Faculty Assembly Covid-19 Impact Statement, Emily Frigo, Leigh Rupinski, Sheila García Mazari, Jeffrey D. Daniels, Annie Bélanger

Library Reports and Communication

This University Libraries Faculty Assembly Covid-19 Impact Statement serves as documentation of changes that occurred across University Libraries and caused disparate, inequitable, impact to faculty throughout the pandemic, beginning in March 2020 and spanning into 2021. The document is necessarily limited in scope to assist faculty candidates in the tenure-track process and mitigate potential traumas as a result of the pandemic’s impact on that process. The structure of the tenure-track process is imperfect in nature, and this statement takes a trauma-informed, person-first, approach to investigating how to best support candidates in making their case for contract renewal, tenure, and/or promotion.

Science librarians at Brigham Young University have hosted a student poster competition for the past several years to showcase student research on campus and to promote science information literacy and scholarly communication skills. As part of this competition, students receive constructive feedback on both their poster design and their oral presentation skills during an in-person open house. In 2020, COVID-19 threw a curveball as the campus shut down just two weeks before the scheduled competition open house. Rather than throwing in the towel, the librarians scrambled to turn this previously in-person competition into a completely virtual event. Despite the substantial …
