Interpreting Summer In The Parks In The National Capital Area Of The National Park Service, Brendan J. Kane Dec 2021

Interpreting Summer In The Parks In The National Capital Area Of The National Park Service, Brendan J. Kane

Human Movement Sciences & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Washington D.C. has witnessed many watershed events throughout the history of the United States of America. One of these events was the Summer in the Parks (SITP) program organized by the National Park Service (NPS) from 1968-1976. Summer in the Parks was a community-based series of events including concerts, park visits, and exhibitions designed to quell racial tensions and promote park usage. Researchers have begun chronicling SITP, but have yet to explore how the story of SITP is conveyed by park interpreters to visitors and subsequently what themes are shared to inform public understanding of the historic relationship between NPS …

Visitors’ Willingness To Pay For Interpretive Services In Alberta Parks, Elizabeth A. Halpenny, Mu He Oct 2021

Visitors’ Willingness To Pay For Interpretive Services In Alberta Parks, Elizabeth A. Halpenny, Mu He

TTRA Canada 2021 Conference

Interpretive services provided at protected areas can add value to visitors’ experiences. They can also serve as conservation management tool in mitigating negative behaviours and inspiring pro-environmental action through educational and entertaining content and delivery. With shrinking investment in conservation from public coffers, protected area managers are increasingly forced to charge for specific services such as interpretation. While some research has examined visitor’s willingness to pay park fees, far fewer have examined WTP for interpretation. A sample of 730 visitors to four Alberta, Canada World Heritage sites was used to investigate visitors’ willingness to pay for park interpretation services. In-person …

Feminist Readings Of Evangelicalism: Views On Gender And Sexuality From Evangelical Perspectives, Rubi Elizabeth Cibrian Llamas Aug 2021

Feminist Readings Of Evangelicalism: Views On Gender And Sexuality From Evangelical Perspectives, Rubi Elizabeth Cibrian Llamas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

There are approximately over 10,000 distinct religious practices in the world, some of these religions are either a variation of each other or very different. Historically and presently, certain religions are positioned in popular discourse as not fit for our times or too conservative for example, evangelicalism and Islam have often been two religions that are viewed as ‘too traditional’ and in need of modernization of their ‘extreme’ beliefs.

This typically gets reduced to specific ideologies and viewpoints revolving around feminism and LGBTQIA+ identity. Ideologies regarding the treatment and place of women have been backed up by ‘evidence’ presented in …

Pathways Of Herminutical Evolution In Modern Western Thought, أوريدة عبود Jul 2021

Pathways Of Herminutical Evolution In Modern Western Thought, أوريدة عبود

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

This research aims to illuminate the term hermeneutics, which was closely related to interpretation in Western thought, as well as highlighting the most important paths of its development, starting with "Schleiermacher", which confirmed that the hermapnoteka is a way to reveal the structure of descriptive internal texts and their cognitive function and search for the facts contained therein. It is suggested that a note of interpretation be the basis for the interpretation of all forms of writing in the humanities based on a methodology that moves from understanding specific specific texts to interpretation of all texts. While Heidegger sees that …

The Problem Of Intentionality And Implicit Interpretation In Communication: Pragmatic Approach, مليكة بلقاسمي, صالح مسعود Jul 2021

The Problem Of Intentionality And Implicit Interpretation In Communication: Pragmatic Approach, مليكة بلقاسمي, صالح مسعود

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

If Pragmatism is an in-depth knowledge of the components of the discourse process, through knowledge of the methods and mechanisms by which sayings are formulated and interpreted, and if language is a key element in forming discourse to achieve communication. The biggest challenge facing Pragmatism is describing the process of interpretation, adjusting concepts, and defining the mechanisms to reach the intention of communicating any saying, and among these concepts the implications of saying.

Since the discourse was originally conducted through linguistic and non-linguistic elements, the efforts of the Pragmatic researchers were distributed in order to create general laws for …

The Hermeneutics Of Exile: A Perusal Of The Vision Exile In Mahmoud Darwish's Verse, بسام قطوس Jul 2021

The Hermeneutics Of Exile: A Perusal Of The Vision Exile In Mahmoud Darwish's Verse, بسام قطوس

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

Mahmoud Darwish has constantly occupied himself with exile and its severity and weightiness on the sensitive psyche by progressively delving into the culture of pain while closely observing internal as well as external exile. Despite the fact that external exile constitutes a complete break-up with the geography of affect and a serious fracture in the autobiography, internal exile, which resides in the poetic, sensitive self, surpasses external exile because it has no spatial boundaries when it crouches upon a person's chest, a person who has a different vision of life, the world, and existence. How did Darwish meditate exile? How …

Elements For Pragmatic Semiotics: The Situation As A Locus For Meaning, Al-Saiid Al-Kaiz Jul 2021

Elements For Pragmatic Semiotics: The Situation As A Locus For Meaning, Al-Saiid Al-Kaiz

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

The author defines meaning as the outcome of a confrontation between a set of possible interpretations and a situation. First of all, by exploring both Peirce and Wittgensteins's contributions, he recalls the foundations of such pragmatic semiotics. Then, from Whitehead's notion of "event", he separates out the concept of "semiotic situations". Next, he defines the grammatical, syntaxic and interpretative elements that compose semiotics. Finally, as an illustration, he suggests we consider the possible contributions of pragmatic semiotics to esthetics

The Bible And The Constitution: Reading Methods, Relevance, And Authority, Gaylen P. Leverett May 2021

The Bible And The Constitution: Reading Methods, Relevance, And Authority, Gaylen P. Leverett

Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue

Politics and religion have united and/or divided people groups for as long as records have been kept. Currently most of the divisiveness tormenting America’s potential for harmony is in these two fields. The debates have many fronts and factions. This paper is an attempt to bring some clarity to the debate between religious conservatives and progressives over how the Constitution should be read. Conservatives are so named because they wish to preserve older interpretations which they believe best represent the original decisions – decisions conservatives for the most part still endorse. Progressives, on the other hand, argue that our new …

Aiming To Reenact: The Efficacy Of Military Living History As A Learning Tool, Leah T. Glenn May 2021

Aiming To Reenact: The Efficacy Of Military Living History As A Learning Tool, Leah T. Glenn

Museum Studies Theses

People around the world have been fascinated with recreating the past since antiquity. Over the past century, however, the presentation of historical information using various forms of human interaction and animation has gained increasing attention, at least in the historic site community if not largely accepted among academic historians. Utilizing a number of non-traditional tools to create a multisensory experience for visitors, this “living” history aims at entertaining the public while providing insights into the past not easily gained through more academic means. Further, there have been many sites, particularly those with a military theme, that have chosen to utilize …

The Rhetorical Mediator: Understanding Agency In Indigenous Translation And Interpretation Through Indigenous Approaches To Ux, Nora Karina Rivera May 2021

The Rhetorical Mediator: Understanding Agency In Indigenous Translation And Interpretation Through Indigenous Approaches To Ux, Nora Karina Rivera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In 2018, I became involved in a collaborative community-based project to co-organize an event with the purpose of collecting resources to help in the professionalization efforts of Indigenous translators and interpreters. Drawing on Indigenous and decolonial theories, this interdisciplinary study examines the work done during this event through a user experience (UX) research lens that analyzes the various ways in which Technical and Professional Communication (TPC) and Translation and Interpreting Studies (TIS) can better support Indigenous language practices. The colonization of the Americas brought a layer of issues that continue to affect the way in which Indigenous communities conduct their …

Applying Interpretation Principles To A Non-Western (Japanese) Training Context, Naoko Yamada, Jeffrey Skibins, Betty Weiler Feb 2021

Applying Interpretation Principles To A Non-Western (Japanese) Training Context, Naoko Yamada, Jeffrey Skibins, Betty Weiler

International Journal of Tour Guiding Research

Interpretive guides play an indispensable role in achieving tourism and sustainability outcomes. Although interpretation theory and best practice principles are supported by literature, they have been primarily developed in Western countries. Little work has been done to evaluate the cross-cultural applicability of using Western-based interpretation in training non-Western interpretive guides. This study evaluates the use of Western-based interpretive competencies in a Japanese training context. The efficacy of the training was assessed using quantitative and qualitative pre- and post-training data from all 42 trainees. Training programs were successful in improving trainees’ perceptions of the importance of links between individual roles and …

The Apa And The Assault On Deference, Ronald Levin Jan 2021

The Apa And The Assault On Deference, Ronald Levin

Scholarship@WashULaw

Recently, in Kisor v. Wilkie, a concurring opinion by Justice Gorsuch argued at length that § 706 of the Administrative Procedure Act prohibits judicial deference to administrative interpretations of law. That section states that “the reviewing court shall decide all relevant questions of law.” This issue remained unresolved in Kisor, but the Supreme Court may well return to it soon as a potential argument against the validity of Chevron deference. Although a substantial academic literature has supported Gorsuch’s position on the APA question, this article disagrees with it. It argues that the text of § 706, surrounding statutory provisions, the …

Interpretive Entrepreneurs, Melinda (M.J.) Durkee Jan 2021

Interpretive Entrepreneurs, Melinda (M.J.) Durkee

Scholarship@WashULaw

Private actors interpret legal norms, a phenomenon I call “interpretive entrepreneurship.” The phenomenon is particularly significant in the international context, where many disputes are not subject to judicial resolution and there is no official system of precedent. Interpretation can affect the meaning of laws over time. For this reason, it can be a form of “post hoc” international lawmaking, worth studying alongside other forms of international lobbying and norm entrepreneurship by private actors. The Article identifies and describes the phenomenon through a series of case studies that show how, why, and by whom it unfolds. The examples focus on entrepreneurial …

Presidents And The U.S. Constitution: The Executive’S Role In Interpreting The Supreme Law Of The Land, Mitchell Scacchi Jan 2021

Presidents And The U.S. Constitution: The Executive’S Role In Interpreting The Supreme Law Of The Land, Mitchell Scacchi

Honors Theses and Capstones

In 1832, President Andrew Jackson issued a veto message claiming the same duty as the Supreme Court to interpret the U.S. Constitution. Do modern presidents exercise the principal role in interpreting the U.S. Constitution that President Jackson claimed was their duty, and, if so, in what ways do they choose to articulate their interpretations? The hypothesis is that modern presidents have exercised a principal role in interpreting the U.S. Constitution similar to the interpretative duty expressed by President Jackson, and they perform this duty, in part, through the issuance of veto messages and signing statements. After a content analysis of …
