Gender equity in higher education settings, such as academic faculty and admission to graduate schools in medical and STEM fields has been well researched (Ceci & Williams, 2011; Cheryan, 2011; Moss & Racusin, 2012). Based on this previous research, there is a pattern of implicit bias towards female applicants for professorships, as well as admissions to graduate and research positions that results in an imbalance of men and women in these positions. This paper examines the cisnormative environment created by men's and women's labeled sports, and how claims often used to exclude transgender, non binary, and intersex athletes are disproved by psychology and physiology. It also discusses the NCAA's current policies on the inclusion of transgender, non binary, and intersex athletes.
