Life Cycle Assessment To Demonstrate How Automation Improves The Sustainability Performance Of An Underground Mining Operation, Kyle Moreau, Corey Laamanen, Ron Bose, Helen Shang, John A. Scott

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The worldwide move to introduce more automation into underground metal ore mining is currently aimed at improving both operational productivity and safety. We have used a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) as a novel approach for the industry to determine the beneficial impacts automation can also have on environmental performance using data collected on mine site productivity and energy consumption. The LCA looked at four impact categories: global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, and human toxicity. When comparing key automated equipment to their traditional manual counterpart, all four impact categories experienced a reduction with automation and a subsequent improvement in sustainability …

Electronic Resource Management System Needs And Problems: A Study On Perceptions Of Library Professionals On The Use Of Coral, Saurabh Karsanbhai Prajapati Mr, Nimesh D. Oza Dr. Nov 2020

Electronic Resource Management System Needs And Problems: A Study On Perceptions Of Library Professionals On The Use Of Coral, Saurabh Karsanbhai Prajapati Mr, Nimesh D. Oza Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The COVID19 pandemic has adversely affected the library environment and its services. Since academic institutions are closed, librarians are forced to adopt more electronic contents to meet the need of users. Managing the complexity of eResources is another great challenge for the librarians. As existing Library Management Software is incompetent to manage the entire life cycle of electronic resources, open source electronic resource management system products are rapidly gaining momentum around the globe. In this context, the present research study examines the library practices regarding the use of CORAL an open source electronic resource management (ERMS) for the effective management …

The Economics Of Babysitting A Robot, Aleksandr Alekseev Jul 2020

The Economics Of Babysitting A Robot, Aleksandr Alekseev

ESI Working Papers

I study the welfare effect of automation on workers in a setting where technology is complementary but imperfect. Using a modified task-based framework, I argue that imperfect complementary automation can impose non-pecuniary costs on workers via a behavioral channel. The theoretical model suggests that a critical factor determining the welfare effect of imperfect complementary automation is the automatability of the production process. I confirm the model's predictions in an experiment that elicits subjects' revealed preference for automation. Increasing automatability leads to a significant increase in the demand for automation. I explore additional drivers of the demand for automation using machine …

35mm still image formats are some of the most abundant photographic film types in cultural heritage collections. However, their special handling needs coupled with high resolution digital capture requirements have traditionally posed logistical constraints with regard to the formats’ digitization at scale. Through the use of a programmable X-Y table camera capture system, both slide and strip 35mm photographic film can be digitized in an automated fashion following Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines (FADGI).

Need For Adoption Of Koha Integrated Library Management Software In Nigerian Academic Libraries, Isaac Echezonam Anyira Apr 2020

Need For Adoption Of Koha Integrated Library Management Software In Nigerian Academic Libraries, Isaac Echezonam Anyira

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The main objective of this paper is to justify the need for Nigerian libraries which have not automated their functions to adopt of Koha ILMS as their automation software. The paper therefore examined the need for automation, the reasons for the choice of Koha ILMS and potential benefits accruable to the libraries, and functions that Koha can facilitate their perform in their libraries. The paper identified the need for automation to include need to handle information explosion, for effective management of library operations, to improve operation speed, resource sharing etc; the choice of Koha was informed by its features and …

Use Of Customized Marc Framework For Recording Books In Koha: With Special References To Public Libraries Of West Bengal, Rounak Biswas Jan 2020

Use Of Customized Marc Framework For Recording Books In Koha: With Special References To Public Libraries Of West Bengal, Rounak Biswas

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library automation means a high degree of mechanization of various routine and repetitive tasks to be performed by library staffs. Presently, public libraries of West Bengal are moving towards automation with koha. Koha, being open source software, allows extensive customization. Most of the libraries are now use their own bibliographic framework for recording different type of documents to save the time of data entry work. This paper highlights the need of customized MARC framework for books in libraries with an instance of use of customized MARC framework in Public libraries of West Bengal.
