University Libraries Five Year Review, University Of Missouri-St. Louis Libraries

Library Publications

Since the last review in 2015, the Thomas Jefferson Library has seen a greater decline in staff numbers. …

More Than Child’S Play: The Scaffolding Role Of Toys, Games, And Play In Children’S Literature, Pauline Dewan Jun 2020

More Than Child’S Play: The Scaffolding Role Of Toys, Games, And Play In Children’S Literature, Pauline Dewan

Library Publications

Scholars have explored the way books about toys inculcate consumer, racist, and sexist ideologies in the young, subversively controlling their attitudes and behavior. Judging from the scholarship in this area, teachers, librarians, and parents may hesitate before recommending or purchasing toy-centered stories for children. Using insights from play theorists and psychology researchers, this article argues that toy fiction can empower children by both acknowledging their marginalized status and providing models of coping, learning, and agency.

Read In Or Check Out: A Four-Year Analysis Of Circulation And In-House Use Of Print Books, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Gerard Shea, Kaitlin Kaitlin Kehnemuyi

Library Publications

As libraries offer more multi-dimensional study areas and online resources, it is important to understand how print books are being used. The reported decline in print book circulation has largely been based on books checked out of the library without recording in-house use (books used in the library but not checked out). Including in-house use gives a more accurate representation of book circulation, helping to demonstrate the value of the physical library and print collections, and informing collection development. To better understand how our print collections are being used, we analyze holdings, checkout data, and in-house use data by subject, …
