Patrimony, Publishing, And Politics: Books As Ritual Objects In Northwest Amazonia, Stephen P. Hugh-Jones
Patrimony, Publishing, And Politics: Books As Ritual Objects In Northwest Amazonia, Stephen P. Hugh-Jones
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
With particular reference to works by Tukano and Desana authors, this paper examines some of the cultural and historical factors that underlie the unique propensity of indigenous peoples of Northwest Amazonia to publish their narrative histories in books. Jointly written by a knowledgeable elder and a younger literate amanuensis, each book in Coleção Narradores Indígenas do Alto Rio Negro series contains the origin narratives, myths, and recent history of a particular group, told from the point of view of one of its clans. Writing down and thus rescuing oral traditions under threat from the pressures of education, urbanization and other …

Research From Start To Publish: A 2-Day Workshop For Graduate Students In Physical Science, Mathematics And Engineering, Jill Powell, Leah Mcewen, Jeremy Cusker, Henrik Spoon
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
To jump-start the careers of graduate students and postdocs in the fields of engineering, math and the physical sciences, Cornell University Library held a free workshop, “Research From Start to Publish,” in January 2019. Librarians and guest faculty members led sessions on topics including intellectual property, writing/presentation skills, data management, and productivity tools. Faculty journal editors discussed how to get published, open access experts discussed “Why not Publish in arXiv and Be Done,” and librarians highlighted the wealth of library resources in the session “$2.5 Million-a-Year Worth of Information at Your Fingertips.”

Digital Preservation For Library Publishers: Raising Awareness, Heather Staines, Wendy C Robertson, Jeremy Morse
Wendy C Robertson
In the summer of 2016, NASIG formed the Digital Preservation Task Force to expand awareness and education about digital preservation needs and challenges amongst its members and beyond. Library Publishers form a unique constituency in the scholarly communications ecosystem, as they are both libraries who need reliable preservation for their patrons and publishers who must ensure preservation of their content. How broadly are library publishers aware about digital preservation initiatives currently underway, including CLOCKSS, Portico, The Keepers, and national library initiatives? How is digital preservation evolving and changing in response to things like new formats and software? Please join us …
Book Self-Publishing Best Practices, Erica Jansma
Book Self-Publishing Best Practices, Erica Jansma
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
I have taken a manuscript through the book publishing process to produce a camera-ready print book and e-book. This includes copyediting, designing layout templates, laying out the document in InDesign, and producing an index. My research is focused on the best practices and standards for publishing. Lessons learned from my research and experience include layout best practices, particularly linespacing and alignment guidelines, as well as the limitations and capabilities of InDesign, particularly its endnote functionality. Based on the results of this project, I can recommend self-publishers to understand the software and distribution platforms prior to publishing a book to ensure …

Impact Of Declining Proposal Success Rates On Scientific Productivity, Ted Von Hippel, Priscilla Cushman, Todd Hoeksema, Chryssa Kouveliotou, James Lowenthal, Bradley Peterson, Keivan G. Stassun,
Ted von Hippel
Over the last decade proposal success rates in the fundamental sciences have dropped significantly. Astronomy and related fields funded by NASA and NSF are no exception. Data across agencies show that this is not principally the result of a decline in proposal merit (the proportion of proposals receiving high rankings is largely unchanged), nor of a shift in proposer demographics (seniority, gender, and institutional affiliation have all remained unchanged), nor of an increase (beyond inflation) in the average requested funding per proposal, nor of an increase in the number of proposals per investigator in any one year. Rather, the statistics …
Contextualizing Information Literacy: Why “Why” Makes All The Difference, Wendy Doucette
Contextualizing Information Literacy: Why “Why” Makes All The Difference, Wendy Doucette
Wendy C. Doucette
Graduate students require the same base knowledge of information literacy as undergraduates, but are less likely to receive in-class instruction. Rather than considering them as external, theoretical signposts or goals, this presentation will discuss the value of situating the ACRL Information Literacy Standards and Framework into the real-life graduate student experience. Explaining what it means to have membership in the academic community leads directly to a deeper understanding of scholarly dialogue, authority and peer review. This grounding leads to an understanding of ownership, copyright, and plagiarism. This high-level overview of the scholarly research process allows students to comprehend their own …

Information Literacy At The Intersection Of Scholarly Communications And Social Justice, Sarah Appedu
All Musselman Library Staff Works
Undergraduate outreach about Open Access (OA) lies at the intersection of information literacy and Scholarly Communications. Reframing undergraduates as current and future scholars allows us to treat them as agents within the Scholarly Communications network. Students who have mastered fundamental research skills are prepared to view them through the critical lens of Scholarly Communications in order to learn both how to locate resources and how those resources are created. This educational approach highlights the various barriers scholars can face in the research process, as well as provides an awareness of information privilege.
This poster will provide a model for how …

Navigating Content & Peer Review In An Online Journal, Kelley F. Rowan
Works of the FIU Libraries
This session explores the use of Digital Commons as both a hosting site and peer review and management tool for the creation of an online journal. In 2018 Florida International University (FIU) Libraries launched Athenaeum: Scholarly Works of the FIU Libraries Faculty and Staff. Athenaeum is meant to collect both published and unpublished articles, conference posters, and presentations of library faculty and staff as they pertain to librarianship. The goal is to provide librarians with another discovery layer for their scholarly work and to help new librarians acquire peer reviewed articles by offering peer review before inclusion in Athenaeum. In …

This study focuses on faculty knowledge, experiences, and attitudes regarding fraudulent journal operations. Many definitions presented to researchers contain two primary aspects to describe these intentional perpetrators: 1) the chief motivation to profit monetarily, and 2) the misleading promise of and failure to deliver on indicators of quality, such as peer review. While this definition is simple on its surface, when put into practice it often expands into discussions of poor or unethical practices by journal publishers. It is common to find lists of grievances clarifying acts that signal predatory or unethical practices, which are used to broadly classify journals …

On any given day, one can go to the Chronicle of Higher Education and see a new article on the trials and tribulations of publishing and seeking tenure in academia. Anxiety inducing titles such as “Measuring Up” and “The Stress of Academic Publishing” reaffirm the notion that one must publish, or perish. While this type of pressure pushes some to success, for others, it makes it harder to write. However, you don’t have to travel this writing and publishing road alone. Inspired by the book Every Other Thursday: Stories and Strategies from Successful Women Scientists by Ellen Daniell, a small …

Book Piracy And The Challenge Of Saving Nigeria's Publishing Industry, Momoh Emmanuel Omeiza, Folorunso Abubakar Lanre
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Book piracy has been an issue trending in the Nigerian publishing space recently. This is because of the ripple effects of the action on both publishers and authors alike. This action has over the years been a bottle neck for publishers and authors in achieving their aim of reaching out to the public and making sales from their respective publications.
In the light of this, this study seeks to explain certain reasons why this action has not been effectively nipped in the bud as well as the pandemic effects of this situation.
Conclusively, the study would suggest some of the …

Many species at risk in Canada and globally are at or approaching a crisis, especially where little or nothing consequential is being done to prevent extirpation. Such is the case of endangered boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in southern Alberta, Canada. Expedient but inadequate emergency ‘fixes’ have been experimentally implemented to arrest their decline and potential extirpation, but use of these measures raises important ethical problems. In their study of the effects of killing wolves (Canis lupus) on the Little Smoky woodland caribou population, Hervieux et al. (2014a) employed lethal methods that included shooting a firearm from a helicopter and …

From Coalition To Commons: Plan S And The Future Of Scholarly Communication, Rob Johnson
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Abstract
The announcement of Plan S in September 2018 triggered a wide-ranging debate over how best to accelerate the shift to open access. The Plan’s ten principles represent a call for the creation of an intellectual commons, to be brought into being through collective action by funders and managed through regulated market mechanisms. As it gathers both momentum and critics, the coalition must grapple with questions of equity, efficiency and sustainability. The work of Elinor Ostrom has shown that successful management of the commons frequently relies on polycentricity and adaptive governance. The Plan S principles must therefore function as …
