"When I speak in Mexico, I support efforts there to create a revolutionary critical pedagogy—one that has not been domesticated and depotentiated by neoliberal dogma. This means the inclusion of a decolonial pedagogy which challenges the “coloniality of power” (patron de poder colonial) that still resides at the heart of post-colonial societies. Philosophers and practitioners of education Paulo Freire (Brazil, 1921-1997) and Lorenzo Milani (Italy, 1923-1967) promulgated pioneering theories and practices akin to critical, multiple, and multimodal literacies pedagogies, and social justice. Although they were contemporaries, Milani and Freire neither met nor exchanged their views on education. This study explores the influence of their pedagogies in two public schools in Brazil and Italy. In addition, it facilitates a dialogue between the two educators’ work, as well as among those who either worked with them or are aligned with their philosophies. This case study reveals how a faith-based initiative offering structured teacher training in media literacy. The program is centered in Catholic Social Teaching, encouraging the use of critical media literacy in the classroom to aid the learning of social justice issues. The critical literacy of Paulo Freire serves as theoretical framework to help answer the research question: How has a teacher training program in faith-based media literacy influenced teachers’ practice when addressing social justice issues in the classroom?
