Verbal Working Memory Load Dissociates Common Indices Of The Numerical Distance Effect: Implications For The Study Of Numerical Cognition, Erin A. Maloney, Nathaniel Barr, Evan F. Risko, Jonathan A. Fugelsang

Publications and Scholarship

In four experiments, we explore the role that verbal WM plays in numerical comparison. Experiment 1 demonstrates that verbal WM load differentially impacts the two most common variants of numerical comparison tasks, evidenced by distinct modulation of the size of the numerical distance effect (NDE). Specifically, when comparing one Arabic digit to a standard, the size of the NDE increases as a function of increased verbal WM load; however, when comparing two simultaneously presented Arabic digits, the size of the NDE decreases (and here is eliminated) as a function of an increased verbal WM load. Experiment 2, using the same …

Automatic Description: A Novel Approach To Documenting Character Description For Consistency In Long – Form Prose, Samantha Akulick

Faculty of Applied Science and Technology - Exceptional Student Work, Applied Computing Theses

Currently, continuity editing for narrative fiction is performed manually. Many hours of human effort are required to comb through written works for inconsistencies. This study investigates the use of syntactic patterns of descriptions in narrative text and subject identification techniques like named entity recognition (NER) and coreferent resolution in narrative text as a step toward automated continuity analysis. This investigation involved examining natural English language to identify patterns used in descriptions and using natural language processing (NLP) techniques to identify those patterns and sentence subjects programmatically. Results were assessed by using the content of well-known works of fiction and two …

Detection Of Distracted Pedestrians Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Igor Grishchenko Dec 2019

Detection Of Distracted Pedestrians Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Igor Grishchenko

Faculty of Applied Science and Technology - Exceptional Student Work, Applied Computing Theses

The risk of pedestrian accidents has increased due to the distracted walking increase. The research in the autonomous vehicles industry aims to minimize this risk by enhancing the route planning to produce safer routes. Detecting distracted pedestrians plays a significant role in identifying safer routes and hence decreases pedestrian accident risk. Thus, this research aims to investigate how to use the convolutional neural networks for building an algorithm that significantly improves the accuracy of detecting distracted pedestrians based on gathered cues. Particularly, this research involves the analysis of pedestrian’ images to identify distracted pedestrians who are not paying attention when …

‘It’S Kinda Punishment’: Tandem Logics And Penultimate Power In The Penal Voluntary Sector For Canadian Youth, Abigail Salole Sep 2019

‘It’S Kinda Punishment’: Tandem Logics And Penultimate Power In The Penal Voluntary Sector For Canadian Youth, Abigail Salole

Publications and Scholarship

This paper draws on original empirical research in Ontario, Canada which analyses penal voluntary sector practice with youth in conflict with the law. I illustrate how youth penal voluntary sector practice (YPVS) operates alongside, or in tandem with the statutory criminal justice system. I argue that examining the PVS and the statutory criminal justice system simultaneously, or in tandem, provides fuller understandings of PVS inclusionary (and exclusionary) control practices (Tomczak and Thompson 2017). I introduce the concept of penultimate power, which demonstrates the ability of PVS workers to trigger criminal justice system response toward a young person in conflict …

Mostly White, Christian, And Straight: Informational And Institutional Erasure Of Lgbtq And Ethnoculturally Diverse Older Adults On Long-Term Care Homes Websites, Ferzana Chaze, Sulaimon Giwa, Nellie Groenenberg, Bianca Burns

Publications and Scholarship

The website of a long-term care home is the face of the organization, providing not only a snapshot view of the home’s programs and services, but also an insight into the organization’s vision, mission, policies, and culture. The website provides information—either purposefully or inadvertently—about the manner in which the organization responds to diversity among its residents. Guided by an intersectional analysis, this study uses content analysis to examine websites of long-term care homes run by companies, municipalities, and not-for-profit organizations in two provinces in Canada to understand how these websites demonstrate inclusion towards ethnoculturally diverse and LGBTQ older adults. Findings …

Automatic Extraction Of Useful Information From Food -Health Articles Related To Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease And Cancer, Ken Sunong

Faculty of Applied Science and Technology - Exceptional Student Work, Applied Computing Theses

Food-health articles (FHA) contain invaluable information for health promotion. However, extracting this information manually is a challenging process due to the length and number of articles published yearly. Automatic text summarization efficiently identifies useful information across large bodies of text which in turn speeds up the delivery of useful information from FHA. This research work aims to investigate the performance of statistical based summarization and graphical based unsupervised learning summarization in extracting useful information from FHA related to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Various combinations of introduction, result and conclusion sections of three hundred articles were collected, preprocessed and used …

Tweenage Volunteer Engagement In Peel: A Community Based Research Project, Abigail Salole Jan 2019

Tweenage Volunteer Engagement In Peel: A Community Based Research Project, Abigail Salole

Publications and Scholarship

How young is “too young” when it comes to volunteerism? If you were to look to the majority of research on volunteerism and volunteer opportunities to answer this question, you might conclude that high-school age (or about the age of 15) is when youth should start volunteering. Volunteering research includes the exploration of youth volunteering but, often, the research excludes youth under the age of 15. For example, the 2007 Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, uses the age bracket of 15-24 to refer to young people (Hall et al., 2009). There remains, then, a significant gap in research …

Kinesiophobia And Its Impairment Of Successful Return To Sport After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury And Reconstruction, Gabrielle Boulding

Featured Student Work

The rehabilitation of an athlete after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury includes both physical and psychological barriers. One such psychological barrier is kinesiophobia, more commonly referred to as the fear of reinjury. All individuals experience some level of kinesiophobia, or fear of reinjury, related to the return to sport after ACL injury and reconstruction. Kinesiophobia can have a negative impact on an athlete’s short-term rehabilitation and long-term goals of return to sport. In many cases the fear of reinjury has been found to be one of the key reasons that an athlete does not return to sport or to …

Social Isolation Detection Checklist

The Social Isolation Detection Checklist is a preliminary screening tool that can help you determine if an older adult might be at risk of social isolation. This tool can be completed one on one with an older adult. Alternatively, if you have been working with an older adult for an extended period of time and are familiar with their case history you can use your insider knowledge, intake records and case notes to complete this tool and determine risk. A list of recommendations (referrals) that correspond directly with the various categories in the Detection Tool is also included.
