Coming Home: Veterans Leaving Service Face A Deadly Identity Crisis, Alexandria M. Hammond

Capstones

Many veterans are not adequately prepared for the psychological challenges they will face when leaving the military and transitioning to civilian life. Researchers, advocates and veterans themselves are beginning to realize how this "transition stress" is contributing to the high rates of veteran suicide in the United States.

In response to widespread concerns regarding Veterans' access to VA care, Congress enacted the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014, which required VA to establish the Veterans Choice Program (VCP). Since the inception of VCP, more than two million Veterans have received care from community providers, representing approximately 25% of Veterans enrolled in VA care. However, expanded access to non-VA care has created challenges in care coordination between VA and community health systems. In March 2018, the VA Health Services Research and Development Service hosted a VA State of the Art conference (SOTA) focused on care coordination. The …

The VA faces a plethora of care coordination challenges. Many Veterans have multiple conditions and providers, and many get a portion of their care in the community, a number that will only grow as recent legislation expands options for private care. These challenges have spawned new VA initiatives for redesigning care to meet them, described in this supplement in an editorial by Hosenfeld and colleagues. The VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) service, in partnership with VA’s Office of Primary Care, and Office of Community Care, sponsored a State of the Art (SOTA) conference with the goals of (a) …

Understanding Maternity Care Coordination For Women Veterans Using An Integrated Care Model Approach, Kristin M. Mattocks, Aimee Kroll-Desrosiers, Rebecca L. Kinney, Sara Singer

Kristin M. Mattocks

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of women veterans are using VA maternity benefits for their pregnancies. However, because the VA does not offer obstetrical care, women must seek maternity care from non-VA providers. The growing number of women using non-VA care has increased the importance of understanding how this care is integrated with ongoing VA medical and mental health services and how perceptions of care integration impact healthcare utilization. Therefore, we sought to understand these relationships among a sample of postpartum veterans utilizing VA maternity benefits.

METHODS: We fielded a modified version of the Patient Perceptions of Integrated Care survey among …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Programs For Veteran Students, Jonathan Paul Lopez May 2019

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Programs For Veteran Students, Jonathan Paul Lopez

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Veteran students are increasingly prominent in U.S. colleges and universities. The transition from military to civilian life is already challenging, and the transition to the academic realm can be even more so, especially when most veteran students are also first-generation college students, transfer students from community colleges to 4-year universities, or both. The specific problem is that the transition from military to student life requires significant adjustment on the part of both veterans and schools, and it was not known how these students’ school leaders could best help these veteran students adjust. The purpose for conducting this quantitative, historical, non-experimental …

Veterans Are Our Passion: Exploring The Efficacy Of Team Rubicon As A Community Building Model, Samantha De Melim

Community Engagement Student Work

The purpose of the study is to explore whether a post-military service organization builds community and ultimately improves the reintegration process for veterans. Transitioning from military service to civilian life is an inevitable shift that veterans often endure without ease. Significant attention has been paid to the mental and physical health, employment status, and family situation of OEF and OIF veterans, however there is a lack of focus on the role their own service on the home front can play in their successful reintegration. This study investigates the efficacy of Team Rubicon, an international disaster relief organization, as a community-building …

Our Stigmatized American Heroes: Examining How Veterans With Ptsd Communicatively Manage Stigma, Rikki A. Roscoe Jan 2019

Our Stigmatized American Heroes: Examining How Veterans With Ptsd Communicatively Manage Stigma, Rikki A. Roscoe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mental health conditions are arguably the most prominent disabling medical condition that military service members endure. Veterans with combat-related PTSD often refrain from seeking mental health treatment due to the stigma attached. Concealing PTSD or attempting to cope without professional help can lead to extreme and lifethreatening consequences including depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Attaining a better understanding of stigma management strategies is important because it has the ability to help veterans better manage stigma in the future. Thus, the current study uses stigma management communication theory (Meisenbach, 2010) to uncover the ways in which veterans with PTSD communicatively manage …
