Understanding Iran: Attempts At Unravelling The Structures That Determine Iranian State Behaviour, Simran Gupta
Senior Projects Spring 2019
The goal of this paper is to determine if Iran is a rational actor and to determine the basis of its rationality. If Iran is categorized as an unpredictable and unreliable state, more coercive and isolation based foreign policy decisions would make the most sense. However, if an effort is made to understand the state’s rationality there can be more effective policies that would be more likely to produce the behavior policymakers desire without causing more instability in the international community.

War Of Nerves: Russia's Use Of Cyber Warfare In Estonia, Georgia And Ukraine, Madelena Anna Miniats

This project examines how Soviet military thought has influenced present day Russian military doctrine and has evolved to include cyber warfare as part of the larger structure of Russian information warfare. The analysis of three case studies of Russian cyber activity, the attack on Estonia (2007), the Russian-Georgian war (2008) and the ongoing Ukrainian war (beginning 2014), demonstrates the continuity of military doctrine and the physical manifestation of Russia’s cyber capabilities.

Decisions, Decisions: A Look At Government Decision-Making In Response To The Threat Of Terrorism, Casey Ann Witte
Senior Projects Spring 2019
In this paper, an exploration of how governments make decisions is presented. The policy decisions surrounding four separate terrorist incidents in Spain and Great Britain are analyzed using prospect theory, and other concepts from game theory in order to demonstrate the decision making process of policy makers. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the decisions of governments are influenced by their own specific histories and policies that were used in the past. It is shown that governmental decision making is influenced by previous experiences with terrorism, and that governments learn from previous mistakes.

The Closing Of The Gates "The Politics Of Xenophobia In Immigrant Nations", Graham P. Nau
Senior Projects Spring 2019
The following study seeks to explain the reason for increasing immigration restriction in countries with strong histories of immigration. The main country of focus is the United States, with Argentina and Canada analyzed in comparison. After exploring the conventional answers of: right-wing populism, economic explanations, and security concerns, the study makes the argument that a history of deep-rooted xenophobia is the best explanation for increasing immigration restriction in all three countries of analysis.

America’S Forgotten Project: Tapline And The Rise Of A New Capitalist Order In The Levant, 1945-1950, Eric James Raimondi
Senior Projects Spring 2019
The TAPline Company, incorporated in 1945 in the state of Delaware as a private subsidiary of the massive oil conglomerate Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO), occupied a position of significant authority in the Middle East. Designed in accordance with the U.S. government’s broader post-war economic agenda, TAPline was the means by which Washington subsidized ARAMCO’s expansion in the Middle East. It was thus a link between the government and the private oil industry, and was as much a project of the private sector and the government. However, through a reading of multiple archives, I argue in this thesis that the …
