1849 was a seminal year in the history of St. Louis, as Christopher Gordon asserts in his new book, Fire, Pestilence, and Death: St. Louis, 1849—a devastating fire and cholera epidemic stood juxtaposed against a city growing at leaps and bounds and flooded by Argonauts seeking fortunes in the California gold fields. In this edited letter, which Gordon found while researching for his book, Edwin Hollister describes the burgeoning city.

Interrupting The Patterns: A Phenomenological Study Of African American Women Re-Purposing Leadership Via The Intersectionality Of Plato And Critical Race Theory, Roslyn R. Hartman

This phenomenological qualitative research explored the effects of race and gender on the capacity of five African American women leaders. Although women are occupying more top posts in the American workforce, leadership opportunities for African American women remain elusive despite record post-secondary degree attainment. The purpose of the study was to examine how each woman navigated leadership and derived meaning from the journey through the metaphorical lens of Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave,” and the intersectionality of Critical Race Theory. Fires, lockdowns, and active shooters are all too common in today’s world. In June 2017, a house in Waterbury Connecticut caught on fire while service was being held in the church adjacent to it (Stewart, 2017). In March 2018, a church in Mississippi was placed on lockdown while law enforcement officials used the grounds as a staging area during an active investigation (WAPT News, 2018). And in November 2017, a gunman opened fire inside First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) tree-grass systems commonly referred to as savannas dominating drylands, play a critical role in social, cultural, economic and environmental systems. These coupled natural-human systems support millions of people through pastoralism, are important global biodiversity hotspots and play a critical role in global biogeochemical cycles. Despite the importance of SSA savannas, they have been marginalized for years as most governments neglect dryland resources in favor of agricultural research and development assistance.
