Suicide Watch: How Netflix Landed On A Cultural Landmine, Shabnaj Chowdhury
Capstones
Following the premiere of the television series “13 Reasons Why” in 2017, Netflix stepped squarely on a cultural landmine, stirring controversy over its graphic depiction of teen suicide.
According to media experts, showing a teenager kill themselves on television was completely unprecedented. Mental health experts say the act has significant consequences for “at risk” audience members, or people who were already experiencing suicidal thoughts before watching the show. It is proven that entertainment, and television specifically, can strongly influence audience behaviors and thoughts.
Suicide is one of the only causes of deaths that’s on the rise in the United States, …

Capstones
In light of recent clergy abuse scandals, cover-ups and leadership shake-downs, it is a divided time in the Catholic Church: but this isn’t the whole story. My final capstone project is a critical essay of how Catholicism (and religion overall) is represented in mainstream media--particularly in secular news publications and entertainment (horror films) in the United States. By examining the coverage and how conversations differ within members of the Catholic Church--from journalists and critics to active Catholics, religious men and women--this project calls for greater accountability, fairness, faith representation in all media, and the overall claim that there are Catholic …

Ableism, or discrimination towards individuals with disabilities, is pervasive in our society. The entertainment world and the media are largely responsible for shaping the way the general public views minority groups. The topic of disability is incredibly popular on screen and stage, but very few actors and writers with disabilities are being hired in comparison to the amount of work that is being produced on the topic. A startling percentage of best actor/actress Oscar winners have won for portraying a character with a disability of some kind, but only two actors with the same disabilities as their characters have been …

Since its beginnings in China, martial arts have intrigued people with its mastery over mind and body, from the Shaolin monk practices of hand-to-hand combat and body conditioning to folktales of martial heroes with their mastery of swordplay and their almost superhuman-like fighting abilities. Martial arts have fascinated and astonished people in China for centuries, and since their introduction to the West they have captivated other cultures the world over. Their intrigue has caused them to penetrate entertainment circles through novelization early on. Chinese classics such as Water Margin and The Seven Heroes and the Five Gallants solidified martial arts …

The Relationship Between Personal Characteristics And Entertainment Preferences, Sarah Miller-Shreve
Brescia Psychology Undergraduate Honours Theses
The present study addressed the paradox of the popularity of horror movies. These movies elicit negative emotions of fear and anxiety, yet horror continues to be a one of the most popular film genres. Personal characteristics have been found to influence individual’s reactions to anxiety-inducing stimuli, such as horror movies. 43 participants completed a questionnaire that measured trait anxiety, emotional regulation, empathy, sensation seeking and film preferences. Personal characteristics were compared among groups of participants with high, moderate, and low preferences for horror movies. Participants with a high preference for horror movies had significantly higher trait anxiety scores. These results …
