Collaboration In The Midst Of Change: Growing Librarian-Archivist Partnerships For Engaging New Students And Faculty, Karen E. Viars, Amanda G. Pellerin

Collaborative Librarianship

Collaboration between librarians and archivists is a valuable way to share expertise and effort when instructing first-year English students on research skills they will need to succeed in college. It is also vital to orienting new faculty to library and archive resources for their scholarship and teaching, as well as encouraging students to value the library and archives resources and knowledge. The unique first-year English program at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) provides a constantly renewing pool of both new students and faculty members. This article identifies common themes in library and archive instruction and key elements of …

The Lesbian Herstory Archives is the oldest and largest lesbian archives in the

world. This dissertation project examines the role of this community archive in

building, defining, redefining, and sustaining community over time. More

specifically, this dissertation seeks to explore the relationship between queer

archives and community through the following research questions:

1. How does the act of archiving produce community?

2. How does a community archive and project of collective memory, rooted

in a specific identity, respond to a radically shifting socio-political

climate?

3. In what ways does the deployment of community produce boundaries of

inclusion and exclusion?

Archives, Artwork, And A Garden: The John Stokes And Mary’S Gardens Collection At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris

Kayla Harris

The University of Dayton hosted a unique exhibit in the spring of 2017 highlighting the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection. In addition to materials from the collection, the exhibit also featured a live garden with flowers named for the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the library, and specially commissioned artwork by artist Holly Schapker. The library was able to reach different audiences and hopes this will serve as an example in thinking of more interactive ways for visitors to experience an archival exhibit.

Looking Forward To Look Back: Digital Preservation Planning, Jennifer Brancato, Kayla Harris

Kayla Harris

Digital information resources are a vitally important and increasingly large component of academic libraries’ collection and preservation responsibilities. This includes content converted to and originating from digital form (born-digital). Preserving digital material, such as social media and websites, is essential for ensuring that future generations know everyone’s story, especially those groups which have been historically underrepresented in official records. This presentation will detail the steps undertaken by a digital preservation task force to first assess the weaknesses in current practice, and then develop a plan to implement a digital preservation policy and workflow. As part of the project, the task …

Year At A Glance: Moving Digital Archives At A Public University, Blake Graham

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

In late 2016, the Archives and Special Collections unit at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries hastily began migrating archival information from a local file server to Rosetta, an Ex Libris preservation software solution. With the aid of the Computer Operations and Research Services team – the primary information technology support team for UNL Libraries – several tasks were divided between select individuals in order to carefully move 9TB of metadata and digital objects. This presentation discusses the scope and details of the archival data migration project, as well as the subsequent impact on workflows for digital objects and metadata.

Launching A Web Archives Program At A Public University, Blake Graham, Jennifer L. Thoegersen, Mary Ellen Ducey

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Many organizations and institutions rely heavily on a web presence to disseminate information and to manage programs and policies. This tendency leaves library and archive professionals with a challenge: how best to capture and preserve web-based information and resources. Over the last few years, the proactive collection and management of web archives has gained traction across all types of libraries and archival repositories. This paper offers a synopsis of actions and initiatives conducted by a small team dedicated to creating a sustainable web archives program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries. The authors discuss (1) how the project team formed …

State-It: Connecting Students To The Archives, Kayla Siddell, Katie Sutrina-Haney

Faculty and Staff Publications

The University Archives Department at Indiana State University (ISU) assists faculty, students, and the public by providing access to and preservation of primary resources and ISU history. Despite the resources and services available, archival holdings are often underused and receive few donations from students and student organizations. These students are often unaware of the function and uses of the archives. To address these concerns, Special Collections staff have created a website utilizing the Omeka platform called STATE-IT to engage students with the University Archives. This site houses digital archival materials, digital exhibits, and oral histories. STATE-IT also provides a quick …

Open-Source Opens Doors: A Case Study On Extending Archivesspace Code At Unlv Libraries, Cyndi Shein, Carol Ou, Karla Irwin, Carlos Lemus

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries is in its third year of implementing the open-source archival collection management application ArchivesSpace, and is sharing UNLV-developed code that extends ArchivesSpace’s built-in functions. The case study demonstrates how adopting and building upon community-created code and developing original local code is improving critical workflows that support creating collection descriptions, cleaning up metadata, and disseminating finding aids that are easier for researchers to comprehend. UNLV discusses how using an open-source application has opened up opportunities for cross-departmental collaboration, moving UNLV further down the path toward full implementation and closer to the goal of …

Streamlining Archives Reference Through Online Task Management, Jay-Marie Bravent, Daniel Weddington Jul 2017

Streamlining Archives Reference Through Online Task Management, Jay-Marie Bravent, Daniel Weddington

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Following an organizational shift that flattened the hierarchy and prioritized security, use, and collection management, research services at UK Libraries SCRC continued to face logistical roadblocks to meeting patron reference and research needs. Specifically, SCRC relied on an often chaotic system of listserv streams monitored by 10-15 team members to manage patron interaction and internal communication. This approach left no easily discernible way for the research services team to assign tasks, facilitate collaboration, monitor progress, or derive statistics. This article will discuss how SCRC successfully implemented a streamlined, task management approach to archives reference using freely available online tools.

What are the core technical knowledge, skills, and abilities that the profession requires in order to engage with our stakeholders in a meaningful way? Archivists must engage with their communities where they are and how they want to receive information, which is increasingly online.

Digital Initiatives Symposium

This poster will discuss the ethical concerns with the processing, digitizing, and organizing of the Pacific Library Partnership’s System Reference Center (SRC) reference question archive, which contains material artifacts of complex reference questions from 1972-2004.

Reference services, a core librarian responsibility, centers on connecting users with answers, materials, and the information that will satisfy their research needs. With the proliferation of online materials and ubiquity of search engines, the nature of reference services has changed dramatically over the last decades.

The archive is comprised of questions submitted for reference librarian review by other reference librarians who had exhausted local resources …

Looking For Answers: A Usability Study Of Online Finding Aid Navigation, Rachel Walton Apr 2017

Looking For Answers: A Usability Study Of Online Finding Aid Navigation, Rachel Walton

Faculty Publications

In a practical and user-centered model for online archival description, what navigational features are effective, efficient, and user-valued components for an academic archives’ online finding aid? Using Princeton University’s finding aid website as a prototype, this research study collected quantitative as well as qualitative data from 10 relatively inexperienced online finding aid users as they interacted with and reacted to the finding aid interface. Major navigational difficulties experienced by users included ambiguous and/or unintuitive labeling, unclear relationships between tabs, and insufficient visual cues for certain navigational features. In contrast, user-valued navigational aids included centralized hyperlinked content, nested and hierarchical content …
