Reproductive Rights In Latin America: A Case Study Of Guatemala And Nicaragua, Katherine W. Bogen Oct 2015

Reproductive Rights In Latin America: A Case Study Of Guatemala And Nicaragua, Katherine W. Bogen

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

A lack of access to contraceptives and legal abortion for women throughout the nations of Nicaragua and Guatemala creates critical health care problems. Moreover, rural and underprivileged women in Guatemala and Nicaragua are facing greater limitations to birth control access, demonstrating a classist aspect in the global struggle for female reproductive rights. Although some efforts have been made over the past half-century to initiate a dialogue on the failure of medical care in these nations to adequately address issues of maternal mortality and reproductive rights, the women's reproductive health movements of Nicaragua and Guatemala have struggled to reach an effective …

Its theory of change is presented through examples, along with the entry points the foundation chose for engagement and how it developed community capacity to engage effectively in this change work.

The article also discusses plans to transition ownership to the Diamond Neighborhood community when the foundation sunsets in 2030.

False Consciousness As A Major Hindrance To Control Of Corruption In Africa, John O. Ouko Jul 2015

False Consciousness As A Major Hindrance To Control Of Corruption In Africa, John O. Ouko

International Journal of African Development

Corruption is rampant in Africa despite the effort to fight it. An effective fight against corruption requires a clear and firm understanding of the factors that cause and conduce it. Using Kenya as an example, I will examine some of the social, economic, political, and legal factors that have been given as causal explanations of corruption. By focusing primarily on political corruption, I will argue that false consciousness among the masses and leaders has to be overcome for the fight against corruption to be effective, and, by extension, for meaningful development to take place in Kenya and many other African …

The Construction And Development Of Public Administration Knowledge: A State-Of-The-Art Review Of Thai Doctoral Dissertations, Pratumtip Thongcharoen, Chokchai Suttawet

Asian Review

A review of 155 doctoral dissertations in Public Administration (PA) reveals the newness of the doctoral curriculum as the oldest dissertation found in the database dates to 2005. Ramkhamhaeng University has the largest number of PA doctoral dissertations. The New Public Management paradigm was the most popular paradigm, found in all PA subfields. The classic theories and contingency theories were the most popular. The qualitative method was mostly used. The trend of using mixed methods has increased in popularity in recent years. Innovation was encountered in terms of a relationship among the PA sub-fields and outside PA but this was …

Evidence-Based Stakeholder Engagement: The Promise Of Randomized Control Trials For Business And Human Rights, Patrick J. Keenan May 2015

Evidence-Based Stakeholder Engagement: The Promise Of Randomized Control Trials For Business And Human Rights, Patrick J. Keenan

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

When a large-scale development project comes to a poor country, that project typically comes with a stakeholder engagement plan, which structures the relationship between those affected by the new project and the proponents of the project. The plan sorts those affected by the project into categories, distributes economic benefits differentially based on those categories, allocates other benefits which can increase or decrease the social power of those affected, defines the ways that people harmed by the project may seek redress for their injuries, and might even modify existing governance structures. In the past decade, through the efforts of large institutional …

State Failure And Political Instability: The Impact Of Educational Attainment In Africa, Jesse D. Neugarten Jan 2015

State Failure And Political Instability: The Impact Of Educational Attainment In Africa, Jesse D. Neugarten

Undergraduate Economic Review

I investigate the role of educational attainment on state failure and political stability across the African continent. For the empirical analysis, I estimate a Linear Probability Model (LPM) for State Failure by Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). I hypothesize that differences in educational attainment in Africa can explain differences in political stability and state failure. Furthermore, I believe that this effect has persisted over time and that early educational attainment in the late colonial and early independence era is a significant determinant of state affairs in more recent times. I find that early secondary educational attainment explains higher state stability, while …

Factors Behind Sustainability Of Activities In The Post-Project Period In Matengo Highlands In Tanzania, Christopher Mahonge Jan 2015

Factors Behind Sustainability Of Activities In The Post-Project Period In Matengo Highlands In Tanzania, Christopher Mahonge

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

Continuity of project activities by the beneficiary communities after project expiry has been a concern globally. While various efforts have been made by project implementers during the project tenure to ensure post-project sustainability, this challenge has still been persistent. However, evidence exists of situation whereby post-project era has witnessed continued implementation of activities which were established during the project duration. The question comes as to which factors are behind such observed positive scenario? The answer to this question can enhance our understanding on variables that can be used to increase sustainability of development initiative after the planned project tenure. The …
