The purpose of this research was to explore how a history of infertility and reproductive loss impacts an individual’s experience of the adoption home study process. Many individuals use adoption to expand their family after losing the ability to have a child biologically. This study examined the prevalence of grief in individuals with infertility and reproductive loss as well as how that grief is currently addressed by social work professionals in the adoption home study assessment. This research project is a qualitative study that identified what birthmothers experience emotionally, physically, and psychologically once a domestic adoption has been finalized. Also, the study looked at the reasons why support services for birthmothers are low and how adoption agencies can best support this population. The data was analyzed using content analysis and interpreted through an inductive approach. The conceptual framework used to understand how the participants for the interviews responded was a Biopsychosocial Approach and the Strengths-Based Perspective.
