Palm fibreis a waste product from the fruit crushing-extracting process in local communities. This study examined the characteristics of natural dyed palm yarns and fabrics producedfrom treated palm fibres. The results showed that fibre characteristics were improved by anaerobic fermentation, and following crushing and carding, were 3-5 times smaller, softer and more pliable.In the production of palm/cotton yarns of No. 7 (50/50), No.10(40/60), No.16(30/70)andNo.10(0/100),the 3-5 denier palm yarns and cotton yarns were spun in open-end spinning units. Geochemical Pollution Assessment Of Sediment Metal From Lower Region Of The Ogun River, Nigeria, Anslem Diayi, Michael Gbadebo

From depths of 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm and 10-15 cm, sediment samples were collected from three locations in the lower region of the Ogun River Basin, namely Mokoloki, Oke-Oko and Kara. The samples were obtained using Van Veen sediment grab after which they were stored in well labeled polythene bags for onward transportation to the laboratory. For pH and conductivity, samples were determined in-situ using standard methods by the American Public Health Association of 1992 while Organic Carbon was determined by the Wakley Method. Dinoflagellate Bloom Produced By Protoperidinium Divergens Response To Ecological Parameters And Anthropogenic Influences In The Junglighat Bay Of South Andaman Islands, Karthik Raji, Gadi Padmavati

The bloom-forming dinoflagellate, Protoperidinium divergenshas been linked with coastaleutrophication in tropical and subtropical regions. Moderate to intense harmful algal bloom of dinoflagellates Protoperidinium divergens (33,500 cells. mL-1) was observed during June 2012in Junglighat Bay of Port Blair in South Andaman. Bloom of Protoperidinium divergenswas observed for four days and declined afterwards due to heavy rainfall with low seawater temperature of 24 to 26°C. A total of 63 species and 33 genera were identified. Assessment Of Cadmium And Zinc Contamination In The Soils Around Pha Te Village, Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand, Anongnat Sriprachote, Somchai Pengprecha, Paramee Pengprecha, Pornthiwa Kanyawongha, Kumiko Ochiai, Toru Matoh

In this study sequential extraction was used to fractionate cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) from soils into six operationally defined groups; water soluble, buffer-exchangeable, carbonate, FeMn oxide, organic, and residual. Soil samples from agricultural areas surrounding Pha Te village, Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand, were classified into four categories; forest soil, upland soil, upper-paddy soil and lower-paddy soil. Total soil Cd and Zn concentrations ranged from 0.63 to 30.4 mg kg-1and 14.4 to 594 mg kg-1, respectively. This paper analyzes the determinants of environmental management transfer and environ-mental performance by Japanese firms in Thailand. For sustainable development, all actors need to contribute to the reduction of environmental loads. This requirement is part of a corporate social responsibility. Data obtained from a questionnaire survey onJapanese subsi-diaries in Thailandareused in the analysis. Government regulation, environmental strategy, organization and environmental performance are the key factors in the analytical framework. Perchloroetylene And Dibutyltin Dichloride Removal From Packed Column By Surfactant Solution, Seelawut Damrongsiri, Chantra Tongcumpou, David A. Sabatini

Surfactant enhanced remediation is viewed as a potential method for removing organometallic compounds from contaminated aquifers. Dibutyltin dichloride (DBT), as a representative organometallic compound, was applied in sand packed columns to observe its solubilization behavior compared to that of perchloroetylene (PCE), a normal organic solvent. Ottawa sand was used as the porous media. A mixture of DBT and PCE was applied as the contaminant. The tracer study exhibited the plug flow condition with a retention time of 79.9 min. The surfactant solution was a mixture of 3.6 wt% SDHS and 0.4 wt% C16DPDS with various concentrations of CaCl2.The column experiments …

This study compares nutrient fluxes (throughfall and litterfall) in a rubber (Hevea brasiliensisWilld. Muell-Arg) plantation agro-ecosystem at Ikenne, SW Nigeria. Throughfallsamples were collected bi-weekly under the rubber canopies (40-, 15-, and 5-year-old) using throughfall funnel collectors with 10 replicates. Litterfall was collected on a monthly basis in the three rubber stands using twenty-four 0.25 m2litter traps (eight replicates in each of the three rubber stands) positioned randomly to estimate total annual litter production (dry biomass)and its main fractions. Palmyra palm is a significant economic crop in Kirimat District, Sukhothai Province, and generates large quantities of husks, stalks and shells as by-products and wastes, which impacts on the local environment. This study investigated (1) production of compressed charcoal briquettes from Palmyra palm husks, fruit calyx and shells, whose physical properties and thermal performance were tested and analyzed according to Thai Community Product Standard (tcps 238/2004); (2) the economic return of the production process. The results showed that 40%of shells of a mature palm fruit and 90% of the husk and fruit calyx of young palm fruit are left over. …

Current policies and plans geared toward green growth/green economy emphasize the greater use of economic instruments. This paper reviews the past and current application of economic instruments (EIs) in environmental management in Thailand. Insights gained from documentary research indicate that EIs such as product taxes through collection of excise taxes have been relatively effective, whilst user charges for solid waste and waste water treatment have been found to be unsuccessful in Thailand. Lessons learned from the draft Act on Economic Instruments for Environmental Management indicate several institutional constraints towards the extensive application of EIs. Widespread use of pesticides in Thai agriculture has led to serious adverse health impacts on users. This study developed a GIS database using the QGIS tool to investigate insecticide usage and toxicity tofarmers in Ubon RatchathaniProvince in northeastern Thailand. Primary data collection involved recording exact locations of residential houses using geographic positioning system (GPS).
