Bobby Ives was honored at a brunch held by the University of Maine Foundation to launch the new Sandy and Bobby Ives Fund on Oct. 19, 2014. David Taylor and LeeEllen Friedland established the fund, the purpose of which is to support undergraduate students doing ethnographic and/or oral history research who have had formal training and/or a mentor at UMaine and/or by attending field schools. Students Hilary Warner-Evans and Taylor Cunningham, currently minoring in folklore studies, attended the event and talked about their research.

Scholars have debated Pope Pius XII’s role in the Holocaust since the 1960s. Did he do everything he could and should have done to save Jews? His critics say no because of antisemitism rooted in the traditional Catholic views. His defenders say yes and deny that he was an antisemite. In my thesis, I shall assess the arguments on both sides in terms of the available evidence. I shall focus both on what Pius XII did do and what he did not do and on the degree to which he can be held responsible for the actions of low-level clergy. …

How many times have you heard someone remark that everyone seems to have ADHD or ADD? According to the American Psychiatric Association, 5 percent of children are diagnosed with ADHD (sometimes called ADD), and according to the National Institutes of Health, 4.1 percent of adults have the disorder. Students with disabilities must be able to access course materials in an equally effective manner. Designing course materials with accessibility in mind allows the University to meet its obligations to students with disabilities.
When making decisions about course accessibility, please consider a variety of aspects of instruction, including selecting accessible texts and other readings (don’t forget Web-based content such as documents and other files), and ensuring that any videos posted online are captioned. These are just some of the important aspects of creating a course that is inclusive to all students.

In the years leading up to the Civil War, many Americans in both the North and the South considered it inevitable that a war between the sections would occur. Historians have debated this idea ever since. Could the war have been avoided? Was a compromise between the sections of the country possible? In this article, the author examines the role played by Maine’s congressional delegation in resisting compromise during the Great Secession Winter of 1860-1861.
