Rethinking Library Instruction: Using Learning Outcome Based Design To Teach Online Search Strategies, Meagan Lacy, Hsin-Liang Chen

Library and Learning Resources Faculty Research & Creative Works

Given the growing pressure on academic institutions and, by extension, academic libraries to establish student learning outcomes and demonstrate their impact on student learning, researchers at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) explored how outcome-based instructional design can be used to 1) collect student data, 2) assess student learning, and 3) improve instruction. Two surveys were distributed to 59 undergraduate students who were enrolled in an introductory composition course at IUPUI. Because previous studies (e.g. Ford, Miller and Moss 2005) have linked human individual differences with web search strategy, the first survey collected information about the students’ demographic features. …

Academic Librarians' Role In Gatekeeping: The Influence Of Vendor Labeling On Academic Library Collections, Melissa Cast-Brede

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The study uses the communicative rationality theory of Habermas (1989), the habitus work of Bourdieu (1988; 1993), and the gatekeeping theory of Lewin (1947) as theoretical frameworks for explaining how book vendors serve as a connection between organizations and individuals and the librarian’s gatekeeping role in collection development. Analysis of variance was used to measure overall congruence. Library employee size, vendorsupplied categories, and vendor-supplied labels …

Libquest: A Problem Based Learning Approach To Information Literacy, Priyanka Sharma, Yuyun W. Ishak

Research Collection Library

Problem Based Learning (PBL) appears to be the way forward. Gen Z students seem to prefer discovery and a self-paced learning environment (often using a variety of gadgets) rather than a more structured instruction module in a classroom setting. Kenney (2008) found that PBL provides the theoretical framework for a learner centered, active instructional experience that relies on collaboration, critical thinking and hands-on interaction with resources. Pelikan (2004) developed and delivered course-related library instruction using PBL over a period of two years in Penn State School of Information Sciences and Technology and concluded that PBL is a worth pursuing approach …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

ABSTRACT

Academic libraries have a crucial role to play in the achievement of the goals of their parent institutions. However, public universities in Ghana have generally not been financing their libraries to the quantum that has been recommended by the Universities Rationalization Committee in Ghana. Public university libraries have experienced dwindling budgetary allocations which hover around 3% of the total universities’ annual budget. Responses received from a survey on sale of some aspect of their services as a possible source of additional income indicated that it exists only in one of the university libraries. Respondents posited that it is a …

International Collaboration For Quality: A Case Study Of Fostering Collaboration Across An International Network Of University Libraries Through An Activity Based Benchmarking Project, Howard Amos, Simon Hart

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The risks in collaborating are high, but the rewards can be significant. Like any business investment, collaboration requires considered planning, clear communication and careful relationship management. The reward of working with others outside of traditional boundaries offers great potential for realising innovation beyond what one party can achieve alone. In a climate of competition for local and national resources, sharing on an international level offers great potential for harnessing collaborative activity.

This paper outlines the initial stages of establishing collaboration across an international network of university libraries through an activity-based benchmarking project. The Matariki Network of Universities includes: Dartmouth College, …
