Teaching Threshold Concepts: Practical Plans For Meaningful Instruction In Information Literacy, Gayle Schaub, Hazel Mcclure, Patricia Bravender

Gayle Schaub

With the unique constraints that instruction librarians face in the classroom, we often rely on point-and-click instruction sessions that do not always communicate essential information literacy concepts. This program identifies key threshold and core concepts and correlates them with ACRL information literacy standards. The presenters highlight lesson plans that promote critical thinking and engaged learning and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate in the creation of a standard-aligned lesson plan.

Studying Britten: The Current Landscape Of Published Britten Scholarship, Jonathan Manton

Jonathan Manton

With Britten’s centenary celebrations comes the publication of a plethora of new research resources, now available to the Britten scholar. These include not only print, audio, and audiovisual publications, but also recent online initiatives, notably the Britten thematic catalogue, published this year. The past ten years have witnessed a significant advance in Britten scholarship, with many offering entirely new perspectives on Britten’s life and work. They offer a candor previously unknown to Britten publications, often discussing the more delicate side of the composer’s nature and its impact on his work, notably demonstrated by the loss-of-innocence theme that dominates many …

Training The Trainers: Faculty Development Meets Information Literacy, Susan Gardner Archambault, Elisa Slater Acosta

Elisa Slater Acosta

Librarian and faculty collaborations are the most essential component of any successful information literacy program. How can librarians entice faculty to collaborate? A wide range of outreach strategies have been chronicled in the literature, including brown bag lunch discussions, faculty focus groups, librarian-faculty grants, librarian participation in faculty governance, and workshops. Collaboration can also occur as a result of accreditation or program review requirements. This session will focus on the method of hosting “train the trainer” workshops to present key information literacy concepts to faculty and stimulate ideas for embedding information literacy into the classroom. We will present a broad …

Adding Value & Reducing Cost In Higher Education With Open Education Resources, Sarah Beaubien Oct 2013

Adding Value & Reducing Cost In Higher Education With Open Education Resources, Sarah Beaubien

Sarah Beaubien

Students, parents, faculty, and administrators are painfully aware of the high cost of traditional textbooks. Faculty are also aware that commercial teaching resources may be unnecessarily restrictive from a teaching point of view.

As educators, there are many compelling reasons to participate in the use and development of open education resources (OER). Open education resources provide a cost-free alternative to traditional textbooks and facilitate important pedagogical opportunities. Faculty using OER in their teaching may select, combine, and even adapt the content to develop the most effective course materials. While OER can offer increased freedom for faculty and cost savings for …

New technologies offer new opportunities for innovation and engagement. At IPFW, a cohort program put iPads in the hands faculty members and librarians alike. By repurposing trusty library concepts such as information and technological literacy, scholarly communication, and collection curation to fit the paradigm of iPads and apps, we created new collaborations, new educational tools, and a higher profile across our campus. This poster will present the tools we used and the best practices we developed while persuading a new generation of faculty members that teaching, learning, and technology are enhanced when the library is involved.
