With the unique constraints that instruction librarians face in the classroom, we often rely on point-and-click instruction sessions that do not always communicate essential information literacy concepts. This program identifies key threshold and core concepts and correlates them with ACRL information literacy standards. The presenters highlight lesson plans that promote critical thinking and engaged learning and offer an opportunity for participants to collaborate in the creation of a standard-aligned lesson plan.

A short presentation will introduce altmetrics and describe how they seek to measure scholarly influence beyond traditional impact measurements (like journal impact factor and citation counts). We will show how altmetrics display on journal websites, library databases, and our own institutional repository. We’ll end with a discussion about altmetrics in your disciplines and departments … and fabulous door prizes!

Adding Value & Reducing Cost In Higher Education With Open Education Resources, Sarah Beaubien
Adding Value & Reducing Cost In Higher Education With Open Education Resources, Sarah Beaubien
Sarah Beaubien
Students, parents, faculty, and administrators are painfully aware of the high cost of traditional textbooks. Faculty are also aware that commercial teaching resources may be unnecessarily restrictive from a teaching point of view.
As educators, there are many compelling reasons to participate in the use and development of open education resources (OER). Open education resources provide a cost-free alternative to traditional textbooks and facilitate important pedagogical opportunities. Faculty using OER in their teaching may select, combine, and even adapt the content to develop the most effective course materials. While OER can offer increased freedom for faculty and cost savings for …

Planning A New Library Building: The Critical Role Of Data, Gregory Smith
Gregory A. Smith
Liberty University’s new main library is scheduled to open in 2013-14, following years of assessment, planning, and construction. Design of the building’s spaces and services relied on analysis of a wide range of data covering user attributes, industry trends, and collection attributes, and use of facilities, equipment, and resources. In this session, a member of the library’s building planning committee will help participants reflect on the critical connections between stakeholders, data, and design.

Roundtable. After the excitement of exploring a new technology wears off, there is an uncomfortable moment when it becomes clear that technology is just a tool –it’s only effective when wielded well. This roundtable will explore the ways that iPads can be leveraged not just to impress, but to actually engage faculty on campus.

One hundred and thirty six faculty members at IPFW have been equipped with iPads and tasked with innovation in teaching and learning. How have our librarians learned to support these technological pioneers (and join in on the fun)? We'll tell you how we acquired iPads, gauged faculty needs, developed app-specific training modules, and built tech-based librarian-faculty partnerships. From a faculty-curated App guide to stealthy information literacy training, you'll discover the possibilities of iPad-equipped librarianship.

An instructional designer who has provided support to faculty and a librarian who has provided support to students will share their analysis of research findings to unpack McKenzie’s “antidotes” to plagiarism and Howard’s use of patch writing for learning. Implications of the research will include discussion of more recent findings from The Citation Project and an examination of the role of teachers, assignments, and the Wikipedia paradigm in influencing student behaviors.

New technologies offer new opportunities for innovation and engagement. At IPFW, a cohort program put iPads in the hands faculty members and librarians alike. By repurposing trusty library concepts such as information and technological literacy, scholarly communication, and collection curation to fit the paradigm of iPads and apps, we created new collaborations, new educational tools, and a higher profile across our campus. This poster will present the tools we used and the best practices we developed while persuading a new generation of faculty members that teaching, learning, and technology are enhanced when the library is involved.
