Do Mlb Hitters Boost Performance In Their Contract Year?, Heather M. O'Neill
Do Mlb Hitters Boost Performance In Their Contract Year?, Heather M. O'Neill
Business and Economics Faculty Publications
This study focuses on 256 MLB free agent hitters playing under the 2006-2011 CBA to determine whether they boost their offensive performance in their contract year. Prior studies’ results are mixed, depending on the econometric technique used and the choice of the offensive performance measure.
Having multiple year observations per player, one can incorporate the unobserved traits of the players (ability, risk aversion, work ethic, etc.) by using Fixed Effects (FE) estimation. Since these unmeasured player traits are likely to be correlated with observed predictors of performance (games played, playoff contention, age, etc.), traditionally used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and …

Fdi Spillovers In Tanzania`S Manufacturing Sector, Johansein Rutaihwa
Fdi Spillovers In Tanzania`S Manufacturing Sector, Johansein Rutaihwa
Johansein Rutaihwa
Using cross sectional data, this study analyses the spillover effects of foreign direct investment in Tanzania’s manufacturing sector. The findings reject a proposition that FDI intensity has improved domestic manufacturing firms productivity; no vertical technological spillovers occurred and a negative correlation between vertical spillover and FDI presence was found. Instead there is a positive correlation between FDI and horizontal technology spillover. The study, therefore, recommends that the government should make concerted efforts to ensure that FDI promotion addresses technology spillovers both within the industry and across the sector; as well as strengthening and widening the education system to enable it …

China's 80后 And 90后: The Next Generation Of Leaders In The World's Next Superpower, A Students-Teaching-Students Course, Patrick Slavin
Senior Honors Projects
In light of China’s recent reemergence as a global superpower, it is becoming increasingly important for westerners to understand its history and culture. For current college students, the culture of China’s youth is particularly pertinent.
In this project, a course, HPR 107: Chinese Youth Culture, was designed and taught through the Students-Teaching-Students program, which provides senior Honor’s Program students the opportunity to design and teach their own Honor’s Program course. The HPR 107 course focuses on China’s 80后 and 90后 generations, those born in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively.
This multi-faceted project includes: subject matter research, course development, pedagogy development, …

Library Publishing And Undergraduate Education: Strategies For Collaboration, Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Michael C. Seeborg, Isaac Gilman
Stephanie Davis-Kahl
Library-based publishing services are increasingly common as libraries seek to provide alternatives for the dissemination of scholarly and creative work. Connecting these services to the educational mission of libraries' institutions is vital for publishing programs' success and sustainability. This panel of librarians and faculty from liberal arts colleges will discuss the educative and advocacy roles that their library publishing programs have developed, and suggest best practices for librarians wishing to implement their own publishing programs.
Isaac Gilman's slides are available via CommonKnowledge.

Restoring degraded desert ecosystems is challenging but it can be done. The first key step is understanding the site history and understanding the disturbance and current site conditions. With this information the appropriate steps can be taken to improve the site ecosystem function and structure.
