Our paper examines the complexities of providing academic learning support for students studying at small rural and regional Australian university campuses. As educators who live and work in regional campus communities, we have come to understand that the academic advice provided on campus has the potential to resonate through the social, and vice versa. Professional societies, established to support academic and professional staff in higher education, need to be vigilant of regional and international trends that affect their core business. In this paper, we provide an analysis of political, economic, social and technological factors that are impacting upon the Australasian higher education environment through considering the case of the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ascilite). Drawing on two ascilite membership surveys along with the relevant literature we identify significant challenges for professional societies and offer some strategic insights for similar regional societies and their executive teams.

Realising The C*-Algebra Of A Higher-Rank Graph As An Exel's Crossed Product, Nathan Brownlowe

We use the boundary-path space of a finitely-aligned k-graph Lambda to construct a compactly-aligned product system X, and we show that the graph algebra C*(Lambda) is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra NO(X). In this setting, we introduce the notion of a crossed product by a semigroup of partial endomorphisms and partially-defined transfer operators by defining it to be NO(X). We then compare this crossed product with other definitions in the literature.

Understanding the cultural aspects that affect a student’s ability to appropriately use resources is important in developing outreach and instruction in multicultural settings. Differences in educational philosophies, students’ previous scholastic training and cultural differences in individual motivation are all factors that may affect a freshman’s ability to understand an American university’s idea of academic integrity and can inadvertently cause problems where independent work and critical thinking are required.
