Developing Our Careers, Transforming Ourselves: The Uow New Professionals Network, Kristy Newton, Jennifer Mclean, Kimberley Williams, Amy Hardy, Melanie Thompson

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The New Professionals Network was formed in response to an emerging awareness of the desire for peer to peer support at the University of Wollongong Library, particularly among new and recently graduated professionals. The purpose of the Network is to provide a space for staff in the first five years of their careers to discuss professional development issues, facilitate experience and knowledge sharing, and develop effective communication skills through articulating their experiences and opinions. As the Network has evolved, it has served as a valuable tool for personal and professional metamorphosis. Members report a higher level of professional confidence, a …

Rethinking Reusability: Implications From A Longitudinal Study Of Online Role Play In Australian Higher Education, Sandra Wills Feb 2011

Rethinking Reusability: Implications From A Longitudinal Study Of Online Role Play In Australian Higher Education, Sandra Wills

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

In a study about designing “reusable e-learning activities”, the author used online role play as a containable, but pedagogically rich, sample. 53 online role plays in Australian higher education were identified and tracked between 1990 and 2006 (Wills, 2010). As a result of interviews and surveys, it was calculated that 45 role plays were a reuse of another role play, demonstrating that the topic of reusability is an important one in higher education.

However, there were only eight instances of reuse of the same role play itself (18%). Predictably these eight instances were a reuse within the same discipline. Meanwhile, …

Measuring The Value Of Library Resources And Student Academic Performance Through Relational Datasets, Margie H. Jantti, Brian Cox Jan 2011

Measuring The Value Of Library Resources And Student Academic Performance Through Relational Datasets, Margie H. Jantti, Brian Cox

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

In a period of economic turmoil, resource scarcity, and increased competitiveness in the attraction and retention of students, the ability to demonstrate the value gained by utilising library resources is becoming increasingly important. Students have unprecedented choice over where they will study, what they will study, and importantly the source, content and format of learning materials they use; and can effectively bypass the Library. These wide-ranging choices have in effect repositioned the student from being an active though still highly dependent learner, into a consumer of information. This shift in behaviour comes with a learning cost, and it has become …

Connecting The Dots: Threat Assessment, Depression And The Troubled Student, Valerie Harwood

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

On April 18, 2007, a package containing over twenty digital videos arrived at the NBC building in New York city. Within a short time the material had been publicly broadcast, and images of Seung Hui Cho soon appeared on Youtube. Two days earlier the twenty-three year-old university student had been responsible for what has been claimed to be the worst mass shooting in the United States. Just days after the mass shooting, the Governor of Virginia, Timothy M. Kaine convened a review panel that was comprised of nine “nationally recognized individuals” across the disciplines of “law enforcement, security, governmental management, …

Articulating And Comparing Standards Through Benchmarking Of Assessment, Sara Booth, Anne Melano, Heather Sainsbury, Lynn Woodley Jan 2011

Articulating And Comparing Standards Through Benchmarking Of Assessment, Sara Booth, Anne Melano, Heather Sainsbury, Lynn Woodley

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The universities of Deakin, Tasmania (UTAS) and Wollongong (UOW) are not aligned with any university groups or networks. This paper presents their cross-institutional benchmarking relationship as a case study in building the necessary trust, collaboration and shared methodology. The partnership was distinguished by the way it tapped into a collegial quality improvement culture. It had its genesis at the 2009 AUQF conference and the partners adapted and ‘test-drove’ a framework previously developed by an ALTC Teaching Quality Indicators Project team. UTAS and UOW had formerly been involved in a trial benchmarking project on academic transition support in 2009 and extended …

A New Age In Higher Education Or Just A Little Bit Of History Repeating? : Linking The Past Present And Future Of All In Australia, Alisa Percy Jan 2011

A New Age In Higher Education Or Just A Little Bit Of History Repeating? : Linking The Past Present And Future Of All In Australia, Alisa Percy

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

For those relatively new to the field of Academic Language and Learning, the ‘new’ social inclusion agenda may appear as the dawning of a new age in higher education—a revolutionary moment in history where the qualitative transformation of teaching and learning feels imminent. For others, it may feel like ‘a little bit of history repeating’. This paper critically examines the limitations of the agency of ALL in ‘forging new directions’ by considering how the past haunts the present. Using the lens of governmentality (Foucault, 1991; Rose, 1999; Dean, 1999), the paper makes the claim that, given that ALL is deeply …

Enhancing The Student Experience For Transitioning Students, Lynda Cooper Jan 2011

Enhancing The Student Experience For Transitioning Students, Lynda Cooper

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

In 2010, University of Wollongong (UOW) released an award-winning program focussing on the first year experience for students transitioning from high school to the university environment. Part of the transition is the expectation that they will be independent learners, able to find their own resources to complete assignments and that these resources will be from scholarly publications. This can be challenging, as they often have high confidence in their ability to assimilate into tertiary studies based on skills acquired at school. At university however, students are told not to rely solely on the ‘Net, but to find quality journal articles …

A New Perspective On Client Service: From On-The-Job To Structured Competency Based Training. The University Of Wollongong Library Experience, A Descriptive Case Study, Donna Dee, Cathy Messer, Beth Peisley Jan 2011

A New Perspective On Client Service: From On-The-Job To Structured Competency Based Training. The University Of Wollongong Library Experience, A Descriptive Case Study, Donna Dee, Cathy Messer, Beth Peisley

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Skilled and knowledgeable staff equipped to respond to change is a key learning and growth goal of the University of Wollongong Library. But how do front line staff develop and maintain their client-centred service skills and behaviours? How do they manage the myriad of diverse needs and expectations from a constantly changing student population, within a volatile technological environment? By challenging established approaches to service delivery training, it was possible to demonstrate a need to be more adaptable and responsive. We recognized that earlier approaches such as on-the-job training were no longer adequate. In 2009 the University of Wollongong Library …

Two Left Feet: Dancing In Academe To The Rhythms Of Neoliberal Discourse, Colleen Mcgloin, Jeannette Stirling Jan 2011

Two Left Feet: Dancing In Academe To The Rhythms Of Neoliberal Discourse, Colleen Mcgloin, Jeannette Stirling

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Notions of culture, cultural diversity and cultural safety have again come to the centre of higher education awareness in Australia. The Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 ensures that Australian universities have a legal and pedagogical obligation to effectively support the language and learning requirements of international students. The Final Report on the 2008 Review of Australian Higher Education (hereafter referred to as the Bradley Report) recommends a range of initiatives geared to make Australian universities more competitive in the global market place while also becoming more accessible for Indigenous students, domestic students of ‘low socio‐economic status’, and …

Subject Coordinators: Leading Professional Development For Sessional Staff, Geraldine Lefoe, Dominique Parrish, Janne Malfroy, Jo Mckenzie

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The Coordinators Leading and Advancing Sessional Staff (CLASS) project, as it became known, explored a leadership capacity development framework that included targeted professional development as a means of improving academic leadership and management of sessional teaching teams. There were four partner universities: the University of Wollongong (lead), the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of Western Sydney and the Australian Catholic University. This report presents the details and findings from a two-year ALTC leadership project to enhance the quality of teaching through the development of subject coordinators' leadership capacity in four institutions. It also demonstrates a strategy for embedded dissemination …

Academic Integrity Standards: A Preliminary Analysis Of The Academic Integrity Policies At Australian Universities, Tracey Bretag, Saadia Mahmud, Julianne East, Margaret Green, Colin James, Ursula Mcgowan, Lee Partridge, Ruth G. Walker, Margaret Wallace Jan 2011

Academic Integrity Standards: A Preliminary Analysis Of The Academic Integrity Policies At Australian Universities, Tracey Bretag, Saadia Mahmud, Julianne East, Margaret Green, Colin James, Ursula Mcgowan, Lee Partridge, Ruth G. Walker, Margaret Wallace

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

As academic integrity is fundamental to assessment practices, it is critical that it is dealt with consistently by staff and taught to students. How a university defines academic integrity in its policy will affect the way it is taught and embedded in the curriculum. While Australian universities all have policy, teaching and learning practices, decision making and review processes relating to academic integrity, these aspects do not always align in a way that reflects a shared understanding of standards of academic integrity, either at intra or inter-university levels. This paper reports on the methodological journey undertaken by researchers in six …

Distributed Leadership: Working Together To Ride The Waves. The Action Self-Enabling Reflective Tool (Asert), Sandra Jones, Marina Harvey, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Kevin Ryland Jan 2011

Distributed Leadership: Working Together To Ride The Waves. The Action Self-Enabling Reflective Tool (Asert), Sandra Jones, Marina Harvey, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Kevin Ryland

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

New models of leadership are required if the Higher Education sector is to continue to provide leading edge change. While multiple theories of leadership exist, the Higher Education sector requires a less hierarchical approach that takes account of its specialised and professional context. This paper explores how a self enabling tool, developed from research into the experience of several higher education institutions, can be used to support a distributed leadership process to build leadership capacity. While the focus of the project that underpinned the tool was on building leadership capacity of academics for learning and teaching, the findings demonstrate the …

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

This paper reports on one important aspect of the preliminary findings from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) project, Academic integrity standards: Aligning policy and practice in Australian universities. Our project aims to identify approaches to the complex issues of academic integrity, and then to build on these approaches to develop exemplars for adaptation across the higher education sector. Based on analysis of publicly available online academic integrity policies at each of the 39 Australian universities, we have identified five core elements of exemplary academic integrity policy. These have been grouped under the headings, Access, Approach, Responsibility, Detail and …

Constructively Aligned Teaching Methods And Students' Approaches To Learning And Motivational Orientations, Romy Lawson Jan 2011

Constructively Aligned Teaching Methods And Students' Approaches To Learning And Motivational Orientations, Romy Lawson

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Most studies have found that, at the contextual level (e.g. degree programme) approach to study is stable over time (e.g. Busato, Prins, Elshout and Hamaker, 1998). At the situational level (e.g. a module) the results are possibly less equivocal, with studies reporting a decrease in deep approach at the end of the module (e.g. Newstead, 1998). Fazey & Lawson (2000) conducted a study that was contingent upon the use of a teaching approach that consistently raises expectations that a deep approach to learning is required and uses an assessment methodology that will reward such an approach. They found that students …

Concepts Of Ability And Their Effect On Approaches To Learning And Motivational Orientation, Romy Lawson Jan 2011

Concepts Of Ability And Their Effect On Approaches To Learning And Motivational Orientation, Romy Lawson

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

There are a wide variety of experiences, psychological attributes, beliefs, prior knowledge and skills that students enter a learning situation with, that have been acknowledged (Biggs, 1999). They also enter with a range of expectations about their learning (Prosser and Trigwell, 1999). For example, the value that students' place on the learning experience will have an impact on their motivational orientation during their learning (James, 1892). Their selfefficacy will also affect their learning behaviours, with low self-esteem and motivation leading to lack of effort and persistence (Bandura, 1986). The concept of ability (whether it is fixed or changeable), is a …

Activism As Terrorism: The Green Scare, Radical Environmentalism And Governmentality, Colin Salter Jan 2011

Activism As Terrorism: The Green Scare, Radical Environmentalism And Governmentality, Colin Salter

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

In the wake of events of September 11, 2001, State and corporate attempts to suppress and repress dissent have increased, taking a more preemptive turn. Sources of specific types of dissent, as opposed to specific types of dissent, are openly targeted. A number of progressive groups were labeled domestic terrorists in the U.S. A significant implication of the ideological rhetoric of terrorism, patriotism and national (in)security is the self-regulation it has fostered: a form of "regulated freedom." This paper explores the implications of governmentality, focusing on radical and revolutionary dissent which seeks to delegitimize capitalism, the property status of nonhuman …

Going Online For Social Change: Techniques, Barriers And Possibilities For Community Groups, Colin Salter Jan 2011

Going Online For Social Change: Techniques, Barriers And Possibilities For Community Groups, Colin Salter

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Going online can significantly assist a community group to meet its aims. Many open source technologies are designed to embody decentralised and collaborative authorship, facilitating a group's ability to share its message with a much broader audience - and on its terms. By reflecting on the techniques adopted by the Sandon Point Community Picket in going online, and how the approach mirrored their grassroots campaign, we can explore the how alongside the why of working for social change. Challenges faced, their implications, and what we can learn from them can also be considered.

Diy Websites For Newbies, Clare B. Mckenzie Jan 2011

Diy Websites For Newbies, Clare B. Mckenzie

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

I arrived at my current place of work in February 2010, a new graduate grateful for my first job in the profession, nervous about working full time after many years of part time work and with the brief of "get more students into the library" to guide me. And there was only me, this is a one person library. Defining 'library' to mean much more than just get the students in the door of the physical library, the first thing I decided to do was create a library website. This would enable me to connect with both students and our …

What's In It For Me? Recommendation Of Peers In Networked Innovation, Rory L. Sie, Marlies Bitter-Rijpkema, Peter Sloep Jan 2011

What's In It For Me? Recommendation Of Peers In Networked Innovation, Rory L. Sie, Marlies Bitter-Rijpkema, Peter Sloep

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Several studies have shown that connecting to people in other networks foster creativity and innovation. However, it is often difficult to tell what the prospective value of such alliances is. Cooperative game theory offers an a priori estimation of the value of future collaborations. We present an agent-based social simulation approach to recommending valuable peers in networked innovation. Results indicate that power as such does not lead to a winning coalition in networked innovation. The recommendation proved to be successful for low-strength agents, which connected to high-strength agents in their network. Future work includes tests in real-life and other recommendation …
