Previous studies have shown that the human lens contains glycerophospholipids with ether linkages. These lipids differ from conventional glycerophospholipids in that the sn-1 substituent is attached to the glycerol backbone via an 1-O-alkyl or an 1-O-alk-1'-enyl ether rather than an ester bond. The present investigation employed a combination of collision-induced dissociation (CID) and ozone-induced dissociation (OzID) to unambiguously distinguish such 1-O-alkyl and 1-O-alk-1'-enyl ethers. Using these methodologies the human lens was found to contain several abundant 1-O-alkyl glycerophos-phoethanolamines, including GPEtn(16:0e/9Z-18:1), GPEtn(11Z-18:1e/9Z-18:1), and GPEtn(18:0e/9Z-18:1), as well as a related series of unusual 1-O-alkyl glycerophosphoserines, including GPSer(16:0e/9Z-18:1), GPSer(11Z-18:1e/9Z-18:1), GPSer(18:0e/9Z-18:1) that to our …

A behavioral form of impulsivity, delay discounting, has been used to examine the effects of drug consumption on individuals' abilities to delay gratification. However, delay discounting has not been used to examine one of the most commonly used drugs in the world, caffeine. Nor has delay discounting been used to examine the effects of drug influence on impulsivity. This study examined the influence of 200 mg caffeine on delay discounting in a collegiate sample. 15 participants underwent two experimental sessions: a caffeine condition and a placebo condition. Human Cranial Growth And Shape Change: Are Fetal Rates And Morphologies Extended Throughout The First Year Of Life?, Dana J. Russell

Selection for increased encephalization in humans necessitated extensive brain growth after birth. To estimate changes in rates of growth and corresponding shape changes during gestation and infancy, chord and arc distances were obtained from the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones of 44 human fetuses, neonates, and infants (one year old and younger). Rates of growth in chord and arc measurements were calculated and compared using linear regression of log-transformed variables, followed by ANCOVA. Curvature of bone lengths and widths were estimated by chord/arc indices. Fetal rates of cranial growth were significantly slower while the fetal frontal and occipital bones were …

Introduction. This study was undertaken to develop an information requirement framework for scientists who use biological samples and related data in their research.

Method. A self-reporting questionnaire completed by 137 respondents was used to collect data regarding demographics, bio-sample management, bio-sample use and requirements, data requirements, and work and research-related roles and activities.

Analysis. Descriptive and TwoStep Cluster analyses were used to analyse the survey data necessary for developing a framework of information requirements.

Generation of the broad spectrum protease plasmin is facilitated by the tissue (t-PA) and urokinase (u-PA) plasminogen activators, within multiple physiological and disease states. Finely tuned control of this proteolytic cascade is exerted by the plasminogen activator inhibitors type-1 (PAI-1/SERPINE1) and 2 (PAI-2/SERPINB2). Expression of this network of activators and inhibitors by cells of myeloid lineage appears to be highly interchangeable between physiological environments, and whilst the role of PAI-1 and PAI-2 in regulating u-PA-dependent functions is well established, the interaction between t-PA and PAI-2 on these cell types is poorly characterised. The powerful theory of compressive sensing enables an efficient way to recover sparse or compressible signals from non-adaptive, sub-Nyquist-rate linear measurements. In particular, it has been shown that random projections can well approximate an isometry, provided that the number of linear measurements is no less than twice of the sparsity level of the signal. Inspired by these, we propose a compressive anneal particle filter to exploit sparsity existing in image-based human motion tracking. Instead of performing full signal recovery, we evaluate the observation likelihood directly in the compressive domain of the observed images. We present a method for generating anthropomorphic motion by studying `invariants' in human movements and applying them as kinematic tasks. We recorded whole-body motion of 14 participants during a walking and grasping task and performed a detailed analysis in order to synthesize the stereotypy in human motion as rules. We propose an algorithm that produces the key parameters of motion taking into account the knowledge from human movement, and the limitations of the anthropomorph. We present a framework for online imitation of human motion by the humanoid robot HRP-2. We introduce a representation of human motion, the humanoid-Normalized model, and a Center of Mass (CoM) anticipation model to prepare the robot in case the human lifts his/her foot. Our proposed motion representation codifies operational space and geometric information. Whole body robot motion is computed using a task-based prioritized inverse kinematics solver. Class 1 integrons play a role in the emergence of multi-resistant bacteria by facilitating the recruitment of gene cassettes encoding antibiotic resistance genes. 512 E. coli strains sourced from humans (n = 202), animals (n = 304) and the environment (n = 6) were screened for the presence of the intI1 gene. In 31/79 integron positive E. coli strains, the gene cassette regions could not be PCR amplified using standard primers. DNA sequence analysis of 6 serologically diverse strains revealed atypical integrons harboured the dfrA5 cassette gene and only 24 bp of the integron 3'-conserved segment (CS) remained, due to …

Clusterin (CLU) is an extracellular chaperone that is likely to play an important role in protein folding quality control. This study identified three deposition disease-associated proteins as major plasma clients for clusterin by studying CLU-client complexes formed in response to physiologically relevant stress (shear stress, similar to 36 dynes/cm(2) at 37 degrees C). Analysis of plasma samples by size exclusion chromatography indicated that (i) relative to control plasma, stressed plasma contained proportionally more soluble protein species of high molecular weight, and (ii) high molecular weight species were far more abundant when proteins purified by anti-CLU immunoaffinity chromatography from stressed plasma …

This paper presents an inverse optimal control approach to identify objective functions of human motion from motion capture measurements. We apply it to analyze human yoyo playing. Yoyo playing may seem easy to us to learn but it is a challenging problem from a mechanical point of view involving a hybrid dynamics model. We recorded vertical yoyo playing of humans measuring yoyo height and rotation angle as well as the corresponding hand motions. Results of inverse optimal control are presented showing a mixed criterion of cycle time and terms depending on yoyo and hand acceleration and velocity.

Yoyo playing may seem easy for a human, but it is a challenging problem for a humanoid robot. This paper presents an approach to generate yoyo motions for the humanoid robot, HRP-2, based on motion recorded from human yoyo playing, dynamical models and numerical optimal control techniques. We recorded vertical yoyo playing of 4 subjects measuring yoyo height and rotation angle as well as the corresponding hand motions. A detailed multi-phase yoyo model with impact collisions and control patterns of human yoyo playing were identified from these measurements. Wendy Brown has commented on the importance of recognising the “interval” between theory and politics, and working in the space between. She advocates refusing the “dichotomy between the local and the global, the national and the transnational, the intellectual and the practical”.
