A significant body of research exists that explores the stressors of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are fewer studies, however, that examine specific effective coping strategies of mothers of children with an ASD. This qualitative study explored mothers’ perceptions of effective coping strategies for their parenting stressors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 mothers to inquire about their personal coping methods. Interviews were coded and emergent themes identified which included coping strategies such as “me time,” “planning,” “knowledge is power,” “sharing the load,” “lifting the restraints of labels,” and “recognizing the joys.” The information from …

The Hancock County Needs Assessment Survey was conducted to evaluate the Hancock County region in regard to resources, or lack thereof. The goal was to uncover the knowledge of resources as well as the perceptions of the strength and deficiencies of them. The assessment was executed through surveys and focus groups, and involved a variety of participants throughout 25 communities in Hancock County. Just over three quarters of respondents were, or currently are, caregivers. Challenges that were noted by respondents involve transportation, lack of formal resources/money for expanding services, respite, and the fact that caregiving is complex and demanding. Strengths …

Sibling caregivers comprise a population of increasing significance to intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) policy and practice. As persons with I/DD and their caregiving parents age, more families are relying on adult siblings to provide care. Today, 70% of persons with I/DD live with family members; estimates indicate that up to 20% may reside with siblings. Sibling caregiving has potential to meet some of the growing social need for later life care of individuals with I/DD. However, the needs of siblings providing care are often not addressed by the service system. Inadequate knowledge about how siblings come to be caregivers and their …
