Because there has been a nursing shortage for the past decade and because the competition between employers for experienced registered nurses is fierce, I utilized archival quantitative data from a syndicated advertising database known as The Media Audit, quantitative data I collected from 100 surveys, qualitative data that I collected from 15 interviews, and qualitative data that I collected during 20 hours of observations in hospital cafeterias and nearby restaurants to discover how RNs use media, whether or not they share these media as an occupational co-culture, & their attitudes toward recruitment advertising in these media. Given the vital picture of foreign-born health care workers, this study has the following objectives:
- To document the labor market position of foreign-born workers in the sector at various levels (national, statewide, sub-regional) including patterns of occupational concentration during the last decade or so, prospects for occupational mobility, wages, geographic concentration, employment by type of establishment (hospitals, community health centers, etc.) and workforce development opportunities;
- To document, whenever possible, the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of foreign-born workers in the sector, including country of origin and gender among others;

Nursing programs have been cited as being among the most stressful undergraduate programs. Students' knowledge and skills are consistently tested and monitored, and students may fail a course or be dropped from their nursing program if scores are not above a certain standard. Anxiety reactions are common to situations perceived as threatening; however, excessive anxiety may paralyze an individual and interfere with effective learning, functioning, and testing. Numerous studies have found increased anxiety causes physiological changes including increased respirations and heart rate, and decreased peripheral skin temperature.
